How do feel about sharing your possessions with people?

I've had a couple of occurrences - one where someone 'borrowed' Shaggy's Boombastic cassette single off me never to see that again, and someone else who borrowed £65 and took 9 months to pay it back. Apart from that, I've had no probs.

Life experience. Some people are reliable, others are disrespectful idiots. I know plenty of people that I would confidently loan anything as I know that they will take care with my possessions or replace anything they break/lose, or that they will happily loan me things in return. On the other hand there those that I wouldn't trust at all.

This, tbh. I'm one of those people who can count their friends on the fingers of one hand. That said, they're true friends and I could (and do) lend them anything and everything with confidence. Likewise I borrow things off them.

There's been one or two mishaps between us, but we're grown ups. If the item wasn't valuable it was a case of 'Meh, forget it mate. Just buy me a pint next time you're around'. The one time a friend broke a more expensive item, I had a replacement the day after without even asking.

It's never something I've really thought or worried about. They're my friends for a reason... ;)

(who would bother to borrow a cd these days?)

anyway, i wont lend anything out these days. i leant my super nintendo and n64 to a friend in 2005 and they're still at his house (granted, this is more down to my bone idleness of not packing them back up and bringing them home) but the decider for me was when i leant another friend my technincs seperates (including a 1210 deck) to a friend so he could rip his vinyl to mp3. he had it for 6 months (he had a lot of vinyl) and in this time period, him and his missus split and he moved out, leavng my technics stuff there. i pestered him to get it back and he said he had to wait for the right time. this was in 2008 and needless to say i don't have them back and he says he has asked her about them and she doesn't know where they are. i've got a good idea where they are/were - cash converters!

I lend stuff to my closest friends. If it's something like a £5 DVD, or an old game then I'm not worried.

I will lend any material possession to my brothers for any reasonable length of time if I am able to to do, and without hesitation. :)

As long as yo get the item back in the condition it left then no problem. Everyone has mates that take the wee wee though, you only lend these mates inexpensive things lol

I'm going have to make a list of my stuff that's lent out:
3 guitars
1 bass guitar
2 guitar amps
1 bass amp
500 watt PA system
1000 watt PA system
Ensoniq SQ1 synth
Loads of DVDs
Q6600 system
and so on ........

I'll lend people books but I always grit my teeth when they bend the pages. I like to keep my books in as mint a condition as possible, while others like their books to appear well read. When a relatively new book has its spine cracked..... XO

I hate anyone else borrowing or even driving my cars!!!!
My partner has access to both of my VTR/VTS hatch cars and she uses of one as her own but I have never let her drive my Z3 and she wasn't on the insurance.

That is until the other week when one of my daughters who is in the middle of a car change, asked if she could borrow for a couple of weeks, one of my hatches as she has two children which meant my partner had to use the Z3.
It cost nothing to put her on and as the Z3's are not the best cars at handling, so I expected her to want her old car back.... NO....she loved the Beamer and now I feel like it has been somehow violated or not the same any more! ( crazy I know LOL).

Do others think like this about their cars and other people including their partner using them?

Lent 4 games to someone because he had no money to go out drinking or buy his own games, it was only supposed to be for a few nights until he got paid and 6 weeks later he still has them despite being asked 3 times to return them if he has finished with them. I'm more than happy to lend stuff to people as long as they take care of them and return them! I shouldn't have to nag them to death just to get my things back.

Ah well lesson learned now even if it took me the good part of 15 years to learn it, I was asked by someone yesterday if I had any old xbox games they could borrow and when I said no all I got was dirty looks because I refused

No-ones asked to borrow anything of mine for a long time now, most of my friends don't borrow things from anyone any more

I'll lend something out, but never really expect to see it again. DVD etc, I used to lend tools. But it started getting way too expensive. So no more, even if you do get them back they're knackered.

I've lent out LOADS of stuff over the years and never got it back / got it back damaged, just the other day I was thinking I'm not going to anymore :p

I mean DVD's and stuff sure, but I've lost some decent stuff over the years.

Some people see "borrow" as "can I have".

I.e. "Can I borrow xyz" really means, in their mind, "can I have..." and if you comply, they will forevermore see it as "their" thing.

I never lend, ever. I never borrow either.

Never a lender or borrower be.

For loan oft loseth both itself and friend :(

Wow, there's a bunch of possessive old grumps in this thread.

If somebody asks me a favour, generally I try and say yes. I'm amicable like that. At the end of the day it's only stuff. If the person doesn't respect my stuff, then I won't lend it to them again.
