Police - Digital Tracking

Such technology cant be used on a whim and all authorisation must come from a senior officer, a court or even the Home Secretary, depending on the severity of what is being investigated.

If this was in the USA people would be going ape.

You must be kidding! Americans are so used to living under the jack boot of their abusive police departments and intelligence agencies that they'll pretty much put up with anything these days. The FBI have been listening in to telephone conversations, without the need for warrants, for decades. The land of the free has one of the worst regimes on the planet when it comes to civil liberties these days.

I do wonder what the future will be like as trends seem to show a shift toward a big brother like system, this and the recent precrime arrests mean we're surely slipping down that slope?

Surely this can only be a good thing??

Lets be rational, I know a lot of people here find that difficult, but give it a go...

The police are there to prevent and detect crime, therefore anything that will assist them to do so is surely beneficial.

'Big Brother' doesn't exist, there's no reason for it to exist and nobody has any desire for it to exist.
The police are very stretched with budget and resources and work hard to tackle the workload that they have. There is absolutely no reason and absolutely no capability for the police to arbitrarily 'spy' on innocent people who have done nothing wrong.
Aside form that, it would be illegal to do so anyway!!

This is a tool that can be used to expedite protracted investigations and used properly in certain investigations can and will save lives as well as identify offenders and provide evidence of offences.
