Madeleine McCann's parents

In the good old days, as anyone who has been to Butlins will tell you, it was perfectly normal to leave your children alone in your chalet.

Now that we are all paranoid, it's seen as worse than drowning kittens

Leaving kids alone is bad parenting and not perfectly normal.

101 things can go wrong.

i dont believe anything about the parents selling the daughter or anything like that. even if there was an accident and maddie was killed in some way their first parently reaction would be to phone the ambulance ASAP, not to quickly dispose the body somewhere. and the fact that they keep going on about it every year tells you that theyre genuine about it. if they were money grabbing whores as some people have suggested on this forum they wouldve shutup right after they sold their first book

I'm just saying that's actually a modern attitude, back then it was fine, nothing ever happened otherwise they would have stopped it.

IIRC they had people listening out for crying babies and then the staff would broadcast a message over the camp tannoy to get a parent to sort it out.

Times move on and now we all think we are evil if little johnny is out of our sight for 3 seconds, in my day I was out playing until the sun went down.

Is it just me that feels that the parents are cashing in on Madeleine McCann kidnapping.

Nope, I've been thinking it too. I've also never been totally convinced that they didn't have something to do with it. I'm not saying I think they did have something to do with it, I'm just saying I couldn't give them the all clear myself.

I'm happy for them to tell their side of the story, but some of the book content is all rather irrelevant imo, in one section Kate Mccann explains how the stress of the search and all meant that she wasnt able to enjoy sex and how she was worried that she "needed to get their sex life back on track". I mean yes, tell your side of the story but is it really necessary to go into the ins and outs (no pun intended :) ) of the effects of it all on your sex life??

Wow, really?!?! Talk about stooping low. Blatant media wh***.

They should be charged for their negligence imo.

very true. example: my aunt told me back in the 60s it used to be not normal to even lock your door to go to the shops! things have changed indeed and not for the better :(

Personally I think it was very irresponsible to leave 3 kids alone in a foreign country. And there is something not right about the whole story like refusing to answer the questions the police had. But in the end it's Madeleine and the twins that I feel sad for.

I can understand the parents trying to cash in to continue the search but it does make me almost a bit annoyed to see the amount of press that their case gets. Most people know about Madeleine but I wonder how many other kids disappear that don't even get a small mention in the paper? Like they could use Madeleines case to give attention to other missing children.

How's this for a scenario?

They sedated the children. We know this much. They are GPs they 'know' what they are doing. Gerry goes back to check on them and finds Maddy dead. Tries to revive her - fails. What to do now? They are both GPs, if this gets out they will both be struck off, the other two children will be taken into care. She's dead so why not dispose of the body and make up the kidnapping story? Pure speculation but it does add up. They console themselves with the fact that they still have the twins but still have to live with the guilt of sedating them and leaving them.

What annoys me is how much attention and sympathy they get compared to all other cases of child/loss/abuse etc that goes on in daily life.

That's not her fault though is it?

1) The media control who gets to the front pages and they think this story can be manipulated to sell papers.

2) The McCann's would want as much exposure as possible to increase the chance that someone would recognise her.

3) Yes, sadly there are hundreds of similar cases each year that don't get attention like the McCann's have, but isn't one poor kid's plight better than none?

What all the hardliners in this thread forget with their "There's sommit fishy about them, durp durp." is that any exposure - whether good or bad - could help to find the kid, and isn't it all about Madelaine at the end of the day? Don't lose sight of that fact. It doesn't matter whether her parents are annoying or weird, the girl deserves a chance.

I know the chances of finding her are slim, but what decent person would ever give up?

All you cocksure hardliners: like I said before, pop your feelings in a letter to the McCanns, or better still find out where they live and tell them to their faces...what's that? You're washing your hair?
