General consensus on Mass Effect games (spoilers within)

I just wondered what everyone thought of the Mass Effect games.
Which do you prefer?
what do you hope for in the third one?

I have just recently finished playing through both of them again. I know that most people think that the second one was simplified a little too much. I would agree that it was simplified, but imo it is a much better game than the first one. I just played most of the dlc's for the first time. LOTSB was great and Overlord was good(but no crew reactions at all:mad:).

I am really starting to wonder what they are going to do in the third game.
To me, the problem with ME2 is that it doesn't feel like a second part, it feels like it is a mixture of first game in a trilogy and last game of a trilogy if you know what i mean?

You go around building up a squad and gaining their loyalty(first part) and then you gear up for a big suicide mission where you can actually die!(last part)

I don't really see where they can go in the 3rd game tbh. ME2 was all about characters and their stories, are we going to have to create a whole new squad for ME3? because we really don't need any more characters.

Another thing is the decisions being carried over. I am sure it seemed like a great idea at the time, but 2 ends in a suicide mission! I have a terrible feeling that this means that any crew member that could die in ME2(which is any crew member) will only play a small part in 3. And that we will have to build a new squad. This pretty much makes the characterization of ME2 seem much less important and cheapens the game for me.

It seems like short-sighted profiteering from EA/Bioware tbh. Sure, it's a great mechanic to have all of these choices of characters living/dying, and it impressed a lot of people, but far from giving more freedom, the way i see it, it has severely limited the directions which they can now go.

anyway, i can't wait for ME3, though i understand it has been put back 'til next year now? At least they will have a little bit more time, which is probably a good thing considering DA2:p

The first one had an epic feel that the second seriously lacked in my opinion.

It was like something huge was being uncovered, a mystery that would change the entire way the population of the game thought and acted about things. Enter ME2 - oh wait it might as well not have even happened.

ME2 just felt like it really lacked the feeling that the storyline meant something, each character had their separate boringly scripted side missions and it really felt like I was just "going through the motions". So much so that I really couldn't be arsed to finish them all :(

Also, I thought bringing limited ammunition into the combat really sucked :o

ME2 - I am disappoint.

Yeah I agree second one lacked the epic feel, tho I found it quite enjoyable, LOTSB DLC especially was very good (even if it was basically someone had watched too much fith element, bladerunner, irobot and a couple of other film references I didn't get but pretty sure are such)

First one tho really threw you into a whole new galaxy.

Yeah i do get the impression that i am going to be in the minority prefering ME2;). I did like the character missions, but like i said, if you have to assemble a new squad for ME3, then that all means nothing to me tbh. I think i will be very disappointed if that is the case.

Also, there are some great characters in ME2(Mordin, Grunt) but also, a few dud ones(Jacob, Jack).

Don't get me wrong, i loved the first one too.
 
actually, i will say that the lack of planet exploration was a big disappoinment for me. After playing both games recently, it does make 2 seem a little smaller

btw. Spoiler warning added to title? ....mmm maybe;)
 
I found Jack moderatly interesting, my main problem was the back story hyped Jack up as something super powerful but (obviously) in the game shes pretty average in combat.

Yeah same here. It's like in Final Fantasy games where you get some "awesome" character or new summon and they're actually just the same as the rest... :\

The best thing about ME2 is Miranda. FACT.
 
I loved both games but i have to agree more with Zefan's post. When i look back at ME2 now you can see it would be a very small game without the missions for the different characters and gaining their loyalty. Abd while it was brilliantly done it also felt a bit lacking. as in here's what happened to you, check this colony, find some alies, check anther colony, board Collectors ship, escape, do loyalty missions, board abandoned reaper, make sure squad is ready, off to final mission. Im trying not to over simplify it but without the character recruitment missions ME2 is very very very short and lacking ME1's sense of epicness. ME1 had me enthralled as soon as i got off the Citadel and got to the meat of the game.

And while ME2 is a great game in its own right, its not quite what it should have been.

Well theres the comparison that ME1 got the gigantic Citadel. A space station of epic proportions made by creatures unknown that looks super sweet.

And ME2 gets Omega, a station made of a hollowed out asteroid populated almost entirely by criminals or gangs that just looks like a slum.
 
I was slightly disappointed with all of the dlc as well, but only in the sense that none of the crew had any role in them. For example in Overlord and LOTSB, none of you squad members say one word all through them. For a game which is all about the characters, it just didn't seem right to me. I suppose it was because they wouldn't get the voice actors back. And in Arrival, you don't even have a squad:confused:

LOL, I haven't really said anything good about ME2 have i;)

Maybe i don't find one better than the other. They are just both great games, in diffrent ways:)

That's what i was getting at really. ME2 really didn't feel like it was the 2nd game in a trilogy, it was much more like an introduction to a world and the characters.

I was playing a side mission earlier, and i ended up thinking "is this going to make any difference in the next game?" - Probably not because the character will probably hardly be in it

I know mate, but 2 of them could have died in ME2, so i'm thinking they may have a smaller role. I hope not though

Though personally Garrus and Tali are untouchable. I wouldn't start ME3 with a save where one of them died

Well they originally claimed ME2 was introducing the important characters and settings for ME3 so who knows.

EDIT: And Garrus adds a huge amount of character to the game, it would be silly to cut him out of a central role.

Yeah, but you don't *have* to import a save :p I'm sure the default setup will include them.

After all, you could ignore characters in 2 (particularly Legion and Grunt), as the suicide mission only needs eight characters recruited to trigger.
 
I actually played the final mission of ME2 specifically wanting crew members to die. I found that it added weight to the story. Did anyone else do this?

It is a massive anti-climax to do the fianl suicide mission with no one dying

It is. Jack's the easiest to kill, just don't upgrade the armour and she gets lasered by the Oculus :p
