Has Lying become the way of the world?

I believe not everyone lies, just those greedy types in it for the money. I try to be honest in everything I do including CV's and interviews. I guess many people lie though that's why they get the job.

I agree. I can't remember the last time I lied about anything TBH. It's just easier not bothering and saying the truth come what may...

Then in that case it's because of the way you declare such statements on these very forums. If you have never lied or you can't remember when you did there is issues with how you put your words accross to people on here without evidence of so called topics you create.

Yea I think you're right.

I wrote one thread saying

'Got offered 55K a year for this full time job - might take it, or may stay IT contracting'

I got a massive tirade of abuse, followed by a whole wack of 'you're lying' posts! Very bizarre.

I wrote saying

'Er .. I'm half way through my career .. not a young guy any more .. working in the city .. honestly 55k ain't that special - probably below average for people in the city at my age'

and got back MASSES of 'You're such a liar' ranting .. including from one bloke younger than me that more than that! not really sure why they think I'd be BS'ing. Why lie about considering taking a 'normal' wage? What would be my motive? You can't say it would be to big myself up as its 55k, not 255k!!

Evidence is very hard in these days of

1) Photoshop paranoia
2) Not being able to release personal details

Makes things quite difficult .. :)

Then the threads are not worth been created in the first place if it's going to create this kind of reaction.

Average in London for full time employees is about £33,500 (£27,000 being the UK average).

For people with 20+ years experience this average increases to £38,000, assuming a similar % increase for London that's around £47,000.

£55,000 is in no way 'below average' and that's mostly why people said you were talking ******.

I find it much easier these days just to tell the truth, very little point in lying, normally you get found out and it works out worse.

For my own experience and observation, it is easy to lie to people you don't know - they mean nothing to you so why should they matter? Lying to strangers is easy and probably quite commonplace. Motivation varies from self preservation to self interest, generally superficial in nature with little in the way of personal consequences for either party.

Lying to someone you know is more complex. For friends, it varies in severity but still matches lying to strangers in motivation and consequences, offset by knowledge of the person and how much the social bonds could be damaged as a result.

Lying to someone you love is a flagrant denial of those feelings from either side of the relationship (ie loving someone, or being loved yourself). For me it is something I cannot do and never have been able to, even when perhaps it would have been to my advantage to do so.
I don't mean those superficial 'white lies' that serve merely to grease the social wheels and in effect more clearly delineate your bonds in a relationship -
her: does my bum look big in this?
him: no.
She looks for reassurance from someone who's opinion is important to her, but the truth is less so than the response, whilst he thinks the question is empty but responds with a positive because he knows that is what she wants to hear from him.

The 'Lie of Omission' is probably the worst in a relationship - it undermines the very best of the other person and bolsters the self-righteousness of the reasoning for the lie in the first place.
Omitting to tell the truth is still just a lie, the only difference is that it is more subtle and complete a lie than the others - the lie is simultaneous: you lie to the other person and yourself.

Perhaps it is because I'm a bloke - and therefore have no intimate experience of being involved with another bloke, thus my reasoning is skewed by only seeing this in women - but women lie more often and more completely than men, particularly when they believe a relationship has failed - it can be months before they will act on their belief and in the mean time the lie of omission is king. Motivation is simple and starts at the beginning - self preservation and self interest.
For this, I believe the old stereotypes are correct - men are basically quite simple in their nature and interest, whilst women are the exact opposite.

But I can simplify this: people lie /end.

On the whole honesty is better than lies, but if you are going to lie; remember folks, the best lies are the ones that contain the most truth. ;)

I'm not talking about 'London' I'm talking about 'the city'. DIFFERENT THINGS. The city doesn't involve places like 'Croydon', in which the average wage is £4,30 and a bag of chips. Read again.

4 years ago the average was 51 grand

Now 55K is below average.

I'm right. Do I win a prize?

Will there ever be a day where someone actually tells the truth?

I would hate to be caught out lying so therefore I tell the truth.
I can't actually remember a time I told a blatant lie.
You have to have a very good memory to be a liar and I haven't got one.
The only 'lies' I tell are to the wife such as:
How much was that new toy?
£50
How much?
£100
How much?
£150
How much?
£199 and that's it.
OK I believe you.

The thing is, you have to lie more and more to get anywhere in this kind of economy now. I have lied to get the job I do now. If I hadn't lied, I would still be unemployed and living off taxpayers' support. I do my job extremely well.

If you want to be a mug and try to tell the truth all the time; I have news for you bucko. Better people who lie will jump over you and run circles around you. It's lie or die in the proverbial sense.

Welcome to the world!
