Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

Who cares if someone else see's your resume? I've handed out my resume hundreds of times over the past 7 years.

Yes but when you give it to a scammer, it's pretty bad. It's got name, address, phone number, email, d.o.b, details of all your qualifications, schools you went to (which can be secret answers), can even mention interests for targeted scams, might say if you have a driving license, might give details for referees who can then be phoned and phished for more info on you under the guise of getting a reference.

Generally speaking, at least in the civilised world, when you hand your CV to a potential employer you expect them to treat it as confidential information.

Oh and I heard it was Square Enix Canada, whereas Eidos is owned by SE europe, not that it really matters :p

But back to PSN, I really hope it's on before endo of march

wtf... did i miss a sony announcement March???? 2012???

As i understand it Brink is mainly an online game but no ps3 player will be able to play it online thats gotta be affecting sales of the game no? devs must be pretty annoyed...

I realize the dangers but at this point, the amount of times I've entered my details into sites and nothing has happened, I don't really fear them getting into the wrong hands. If anything does happen, then I'll deal with it. Not saying I enter my details into any site, I always make sure its secure but the risk is always there.

I've done well to avoid fake job listings up to this point but finding out someones info is easy with the right tools anyway. No matter if someone has your resume or not, theres way more ways for someone to scam you.

Hell, my parents signed up to Talk Talk when a door to door sales man came around. I told them to cancel it asap. The sales man said we could get 14mb speeds at my address but I know for a fact we can only get 6mb. Talk Talk now have my parents info and bank details. Ouch. :/

Either it was a legit TalkTalk salesperson in which case you have a connection and can cancel it if it doesn't reach the speed they sold it as and get a refund or you don't have a connection and the DPA applies and they have to delete any data or it wasn't a legit TT salesperson and a scammer has their bank details.
Why would it matter if TT have their bank details? Unless they get hacked.. but I think you run that risk with any ISP to some degree. Resumes tend to be packed with sensitive information, as I mentioned, if you can't see how having referees would be useful in phishing then.. yea :p

PSN haxx used Amazon cloud. I seem to remember bits of the cloud being down at around the time PSN went down too

Personally I have not seen any flooding of pre-owned ps3's hitting the market since this outage.

The only talk of people selling their consoles are from random websites where most are kids complaining. Even most of them will stick with sony, even after all this.

Can't say about consoles, but there are a shed load of second hand Call of Duty titles in a couple of my local game stores, way more than I've ever seen for such a popular series. Could be a coincidence, but it does make me wonder how many people have jumped ship.

Even though all this won't make me get rid of my PS3, it is starting to get mildly annoying now.

Welcome back...

Something the guys on the weekend confirmed said last week, hows about sony sending out a prepayed psn card. Aside the free'be, it'd be a confidence booster welcome back to the store, and maybe an eyeopener in to other payment ways to parents of juniors.

Another personal, if it were possible.....

Sony, here it is folks, that backwards compatable ps2 enviroment you allways wanted... store releases coming soon:)

Pretty much all is forgiven id imagine, that'd be a real trump card sony could play:)

I might have my 360 and a couple of games on the PS3 I'm playing the single player for, but I'm looking forward to PSN going back up so I can sync my trophies >__>.

I would rather it be secure than it coming up fast and this happening all over again,

They're going to have to have a system better than the US military for it not to happen again. :D I'm pretty sure the hackers will see this as a challenge to see what they can do with the improved security.

I dont see why sony always seem to get the bad end of the stick here, its mainly the crackers fault, if they werent so malicious then there would have been such a big problem. People will say to that statement that its sonys fault for haveing such poor protection, but if ppl never cracked it then it would never have been comprimised.

I honestly dont think so - well any self-respecting hacker...

Ultimately the original offence was criminal and intentional and the DDOS attack was a window of opportunity to be used. They didnt just luck themselves into access to Sonys backend (oo-er  )

If such a thing was a challenge then surely every public network would be hacked on a regular basis for the lulz?

ps3ud0

that would be better than them gifting us a crappy game, just give me a £20 psn card id take that lol

Like say.. Square Enix? HB Gary, RSA, Commodo Or the US Military (Have we all forgotten Gary McKinnon?)?
I don't know if the DDoS made the hack any easier, if anything you'd expect it to frustrate efforts :D
That said I don't know the mechanism by which they gained access (if I did I'd be expecting a knock on the door!).

Hehe, I don't think that would be as simple as a firmware update, otherwise why did they cut it in the first place? I thought it was to cut production costs? Or was it a potential piracy loop-hole? Anyway, it would be very welcome.

Remind me when theyve been hacked on a regular basis and you may have a point...

I agree it's unlikely to happen again, but if it was "for teh lulz" they'll have another go at it.
Anyway, word is they used Amazon's cloud service for the haxx, which has been used to crack WEP keys in minutes.. but I still don't know how they used it. Sony will certainly be on high alert for a while but give it a few years and they'll be vulnerable to social engineering techniques. Nothing is un-crackable.

Still.. bring it back already Sony!!

edit:
Interesting article discussing possible attack vectors.

nothing wrong with my fw11s. coming up to 3 years old now and it's stood up very well imo :)

Oh yeah, nothing wrong with them. Just not a preference of my own, I always steer towards Dells. :p a lot of laptops are essentially the same stuff, different case and brand lol. The winners are the guys who get performance with adequate cooling right. :p
