They would never give coded warnings or any warnings for attacks on members of the security forces or HMG, but some of the time, if it was to be an attack on the Public or within a public area, they would have this predetermined codeword that was given to the Police and Newspapers so that they would know a real device was in play and the area HAD to be cleared/Warning taken seriously.

It was the IRA’s way of remaining in some control. They knew a massive bomb in a public place could kill lots of people, like it did in Omagh and it could be too counterproductive for the sick minds and ethos of their supporters to handle.

After the Poppy day bomb in Northern Ireland, when the IRA left a bomb at the cenotaph in Enniskillen and killed 12 people, old people and females mostly. The IRA **** themselves, they were really worried. There was talk around Army barracks and the like of regiments and companies of our British Army going a little off the official track and just going out armed against orders and taking out the top IRA men while they slept. Talk of a real war on the streets taking it directly to the republican leadership and anyone who uttered their filthy name.

Some say it was at this point when Gerry and Martin, in secret, waved the white flag.

Funny enough thats exactly what I was thinking myself.

Why launch a terrorist campaign if your trying to minimise the loss of life? That kinda defeats the point.

In terms of the IRA, the bomb's intention is to ensnare the security forces. They give a recognised code word so that the police can clear innocent civilians -- referred to as "non-combatants" -- out of the area before the explosion.

They aren't out to cause death and injury against everyone as they can't guarantee they won't suddenly vapourise the entire nun population of St-Whoever's-on-the-Whatever on their annual day out. Something like that would cause considerable damage amongst their support network.

I understand this, but, surely by revealing the location to prevent loss of life to random civilians they're also going to inform the "security forces". It's not like they send a warning and the police only tell the civilians, but keep quiet to the security forces in the area...
 
we should all stay indoors and not go to work unless the threat level is lowered.

watch it go green within a a couple of days :p
