Brand new car for sub £6k

hyundai i10 is a good deal, and when you chuck in the warranty you cant really go wrong.

of course its not worth much after, but if you get this sort of car, your the sort to buy it, keep it 5 years then swap it for another.

I have the same engine in my car(Toyota IQ)
It is not going set the world on fire but it has character. You do not buy for traffic light racing
It copes on motorways well and sits at 75-80 mph but as someone else said you need to look ahead because you may need to drop a gear for inclines.
I do not have to pay road tax and I bought it secondhand and it has 5 year Warranty.
It has full climate control,Dusk sensing lights and rain sensitive wipers.
I am very pleased with and I save loads of money on fuel cost, insurance, hopefully servicing.
So the 107 should save you money, another car to look at may be Aygo I have not driven one.

its that price for a reason.
my ex had the C1 from new in 06 and the old dear just had a 107 for two weeks recently as a courtesy car.
[both the same cars really] there is really nothing to like about these cars at all.
yes, they are economical and would make desirable first cars. but there is no real reason to own one after that in my opinion. sure it makes cheap motoring but something like a panda would offer similar benefits and be a little more fun to drive.

im not disputing that it is excellent value, but its certainly not an excellent choice.

drive one for a day: the seats are uncomfortable, the driving position is awkward, the clutch is unresponsive, the brakes are average at <50 and abysmal at motorway speeds. i could go on but the main gripe would be the gearbox... never have i encountered a more hateful bag of failure in my entire life. it feels like you are stirring a bucket of gravel with a drinking straw.

the aygo/c1/107 are all the same car are they not?

I think I would rather chop off my testicles with a rusty bread knife than drive either. You are right though 6k for a bran new motor aint all that bad.
^this. Seriously, they are hideous, hideous things: I even avoid having them as hire cars. I guess if you just do short town journeys it may be just about bearable, and I'm sure they're really reliable but still

they will be bought by people who seem them as white goods.

People unable to differentiate from one car to another the same way we can't differentiate one fridge freezer from another.

Yes they are hateful grotboxs, but if you're the sort of person who just wants "a car" then it will do fine. Not many of them in this forum though, but my sister in law is one.

Brother in law went out to buy a car, she completely failed to understand why he didn't buy the first car he found in their budget and came home. She went mad at him because he took a week or two to find something. She'd be terrible with somebody like fox who takes years to choose !

I've driven a few of those 107/C1/Aygo cars, they are actually bloody brilliant. They are quite nippy as they're so light, they handle well as again they're light and the wheels are right in each corner of the car!

"Bloody brilliant" might be over-doing it somewhat :p There is definitely a time and a place for cars like that, but not in my lifestyle :)

Haha! Few disputes going on here! Seems like a marmite car? I guess any_mk3 means for the price they're brilliant, but not generally :)

rjkoneill, yeah, they all share the same platform. The car is mainly engineered by Toyota.

I've no idea how cheap a Fiat Panda is now but they are about the same price and I'd rather have one of those.

Hmm seems the cheapest Fiat Panda 1.1 Active Eco Euro 4 5dr is still £6868.

No - actually good bit cheaper! http://www.fiatsupasaver.com/default.aspx

+1 For the panda.

I actually have one of these, but please for the love of god, dont get the euro 4. Euro 5 is much better - the 1.2 engine makes a good bit of difference. They are not £6868, ours was £5995 this auctually included the roof rails, side rubbers as well.

Great city car, on faster roads there is a bit of noise also can feel like your being blown about a fair bit in the wind. The car feels very high up.

Better value than the KA, Fait 500 has the same engine as the the Panda. Great value for money if you want to go new.

Well a go kart is both cheaper and handles better than one of these washing machines.

I'm pretty sure it has about the same amount of boot space with the only negative being one seat.

I test drove an Aygo last September when I was still looking at buying a new car. I returned it with a "thanks, but I'll keep my 12 year old rust bucket".

As mentioned:
- The gearbox is dreadful. It's like stirring porridge to find the right gear and then it doesn't feel like it's selected correctly when it's in.
- It's not nippy. It feels like it has no guts at all, mainly because you've got a 1L 67bhp engine strapped to something which weighs 830kg. In fairness this was in comparison to the car I was coming from which had 74bhp but weighed only 830kg. The Starlet was *much* nippier.
- There is no room in the boot. There was enough room in the front for me at 6'4 which is good, but there wasn't really enough room for a passenger in the back afterwards.

As for the handling, that was slightly more interesting. It doesn't handle too badly from it's near square wheelbase, but I wasn't up for putting it round the sharp corners near me at 60 like I did with the Starlet.

Final point would be that when I was driving it back on the motorway it sounded awful at 70mph and it wasn't really up for going much faster. In fairness this was the real killer for me as I was doing 12k motorway miles a year.

In the end I ended up with a £2.2k 8 year old Ibiza TDI. Not bad on fuel, loads of room, fast as hell compared to the Aygo and it was a third of the price. :D
