Turning things off at the wall!

I have to turn on the things that glow at me, eg. speakers and stuff so I can get to sleep at night, and its easier to just hit the switch at the wall than go through them all individually. If my PC were in a different room I wouldn't bother

I do love the uproar about leaving things on standby, as in reality you're wasting the draw to keep an LED running..

And all the power that's dissipated in the power supply that converts mains AC down to whatever DC supply voltage the product uses. In older stuff with non switch-mode supplies this can be pretty significant. And even modern power electronics doesn't have 100% efficiency.

Plus, why have LEDs running at all? If thousands of people have a few LEDs running 24/7 that's some serious wasted power. Wasted power is stupid.

I don't pay the bill so meh.

I have a couple of surge protectors that have a master socket, so that when you switch off the appliance, say my PC, it switches off the sockets for the ancillary electricals such as monitors, amps etc...

I turn 2 sockets off at night.

1st socket has an extension lead that my pc and 2 monitors are connected to, pretty sure even on standby my monitors use some electricity.

2nd socket also has an extension lead that my tv, sky + xbox is connected to. I know for a fact my tv uses electricity on standby, i've been told up to £1 a day.

My electricity bill has been steadily climbing for last last few years and is now up to £100 a month, im trying to keep it at that so turnig 2 switches off at night isn't exactly a lot off hassle.

My roommate plugs out any unused extension cords, so apparantly it doesn't even need a LED to waste energy that barely amounts to more than static.

The only things I leave turned on are my fridge/freezer and the electricity supply to my boiler. Everything else I turn on while I'm using it and off when I'm not. I'll unplug them, too, which is just habit. Since they're all plugged into a multisocket thing that I leave plugged in and turned on, the habit doesn't make any sense.

I dont have anything that needs to store time etc and I also live in a rather small 1 bed flat so I turn everything off at the wall too. I only have my fridge/freezer and washing machine plugged in and turned on but thats only as I cant get to the switch for the washing machine easily.

I see no point in wasting electricity and having to pay for it when I'm not using it.

Status LED's (as distinct from lighting-LEDs) use power in the order of milliwatts.

a million of them would only use a kilowatt - hardly a large amount of power.

Logic fail - you assume the power is produced at the device? It has to get all the way there first, it's also not just the LED consuming power, you must know that? Get a watt metre and go measure your devices around the house, I did.

Well we don't have switches at the wall so I never turn things off there.

I also never turn my PC off, actually my 2 PC's, my wife's PC and our oldest sons PC are on 24/7

Why? Just for the epeen of saying so?
Not just aimed at you, do people think they have to do this to qualify to be a proper geek :)

The laziness of some people to blatantly waste resources like they do, shocking. Bit of a rant but meh. The mindlessness of saying 'oh it's only a little bit it doesn't matter'

Mine:
1 Machine is a seedbox/web server (low memory and slow processor no good for anything else)
1 machine acts as a streaming media server (this is my main machine)

Wife's:
She takes part in one of these folding like things so her PC is kinda always in use.

Sons:
He runs a game server on that machine.
He does have a second machine which he does turn off.

The only time I ever do it is if I am going away on holiday.

My old man would always turn off everything before going to bed and without fail turn it on in the morning and re-set the time on the VCR as otherwise it would constantly flash.
