Cheap, fun car?

Toyota Corolla 1.6 SR just to be different from the lemming brigade :p

They are FWD, short ratio 6 speed box, VVTI 138BHP engine (chain driven) sports suspension etc

In what year did the Corolla 1.6 have 138bhp? The 1.6 VVTi seems to have had 108/109 bhp from about 2000 to present.

Ok, so since no one else has suggested it yet, Honda Civic VTi 3 door 1.6, will get a very good one for under £3k. There's a V reg Jordan Civic on autotrader with 51k miles for £2800. I know its a lot for a 1999 car but your paying for the Jordan badge there really. If you find a well looked after 9-10 year old one it'll probably still be cheaper than that. It can easily be taken to type r performance for little money. Great fun to drive too.

Really? Are you sure? Where are you going to get this extra 30 bhp from?

Honda's are notoriously expensive to get more power from.

you mean 25bhp right? EK9 Type R - 185bhp.
Upgrade exhaust and filter, better plugs + leads, source some second hand type r cams, decat! (that's 6-7bhp on its own) and makes a much nicer noise :D. And if you have money left a remap. It's breaking the 200bhp mark thats hard and expensive on honda's.
If it was me i'd just do a full exhaust including manifold and decat, and a filter. It might not get you type r bhp, but it won't be too far off and will feel much faster than stock to drive. Decat alone makes such a huge difference in power delivery.

You can get a top condition mk1 mx5 for under half your budget, if that's "practical" enough for you. I'm finding it a very easy car to live with, although my comparison is an old mini :P

Filter, plugs and leads won't add anything. It would need manifold, decat and full exhaust, then remap and cams might get a bit closer. Remember the B16b has mad pistons with very high compression. Theres a few grand to even get close.

Just get this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2778240.htm

Already estimated to be over 180 bhp :p

I'd say a nice phase 1 172 and some change in your pocket, or if you want the roof down action an MX5.

Personally wouldn't call all that a 'little money' job though! Plus adding all that on with 0ncb means insurance could be fun, not sure how badly it'd bump it up though.

Maybe a curve ball but a Lupo GTi?

Pretty rare/not many for sale, especially not for under 3k.

Autotrader site shows 13 for sale, with only the one £3 under budget.

Nice little cars though.
