IT Drones full of it.

I am a 'Drone', I often get users think they know everything because they once setup a computer for their parents which they bought from PC world.

We are not all as you describe but it is users like your self that annoy me at work, if you enjoy doing IT so much and feel the need to cop out others of their job because you are clearly better at it... Start a new career.

I had some user swear at me for not having put Office 2007 on a public machine that had 2010 as he couldn't print his PowerPoint. Of course he tells me this 10 minutes before his class so not only is he a dick head but he can't even manage his time. Needless to say it hasn't been done. He can apologise for his attitude first.

I'm what you might call a Drone, Op, but I do listen to people, in fact I prefer it if people know how to problem solve simple stuff like this, makes my life easier and I can focus on important stuff like making sure servers are maintained instead of fannying around with desktops :p

After all, now that I'm a ladder usage expert, fire expert and box carrying expert, I have a lot on my plate!

Just me or is it allways our racist doomsday hailing nutters who constantly have problems with the IT department?

Happens all the time in every company in every field :)

We have 2 servers, one in our office for all all the chat requirements, and the second in the support office that deals with everything (inbound and outbound).

Sitting there one day and little pop up appears in the corner of the screen saying we've lost network access. Stroll in to support to see the cleaner by the server hoovering. Advise the boss that the enter department has lost connection to the internet so we can't do our jobs, and that its highly likely the cleaner has hit the plugs again with the hoover, notice the key word there, AGAIN!

Anyway, 4 hours later they track the problem down to a partially unplugged plug where the cleaner had been when the whole lot had gone down. Great for us as we just sat around the office chatting.

badcompany, in truth, techies love people like you. You save them from traipsing around fixing daft end users issues.

Companies generally love people like you too because if you pay some dood to do filing and he takes it upon himself to do IT Support, you've just saved yourself a salary.

Unfortunately, what usually happens is you get someone who *thinks* they know stuff because they installed some GUI version of Linux one time which makes them a leet hax0r to their peers who then proceeds to tell you the best way to do a job you probably didn't want to do today anyway :p

Nice picture of yourself there. Most IT monkeys look like that.

Do you have these self righteous so called experts were you work or are you one of them?

You think they're bad? they're nothing compared to the office amateurs who think they know everything and usually end up creating more problems for the 'drones'.

Most users cause problems by trying to fix them.

Your IT guy is a bit of a n00b though, it's always worth talking to people before looking into an issue.

As an IT monkeh I do get called worse sometime's (mainly behind my back cus that's what office jockey's like doing). But then you become their best friend when they want all their precious data recovering.
