Hi all, how good are the Western Digital Caviar Blacks for main drives (OS and a few apps)? I've no interest in the SSD's as I'm not a gamer as such and I can wait 42 seconds for Win7 to load.

They are very good. I own a few as well as having used them on various PC builds for people.

As a side note, the reason you state for not having an interest in SSD's (games) is one of the areas where SSD's do not really shine.

Thanks for the info on that, looks like I may invest in a couple now.

Very true, and if I'm honest I've seen too many posts on this and other forums complaining of failing drives of one description or another, plus the price is still too high for my liking atm and that's why I asked about the WD Blacks.

I nearly exclusively use WD caviar blacks and find them a good very reliable drive.

Have outlasted other make's I've tried, though I haven't tried a Samsung F3 before

+1 for SSD... but if you really can't...

Get a Sammy F3 instead of a WD Black...

F3 is cheaper, just as fast (if not faster), quieter as well... The black is just too noisy!

Looks like I'm leaning towards the Sammy F3's then, didn't know the blacks were noisier.
