New proposed driving laws for young drivers

Think a BHP restriction would work better than engine size then?

say 120BHP? or 105BHP? something like that.

Considering they do passats with 105bhp engines.

Yeah those 118bhp elise are dead slow :p
Theres a way around everything.

We just need to shoot people that cant drive! Oh wait thats going too far too probally!

Re: speed & danger etc

I wonder why they don't fit speed limiters to cars as they do with trucks?

Or is that far too plain & simple......?

In Northern Ireland, drivers must display an 'R' (restricted) plate for one year after passing their test regardless of age. They are restricted to 45mph and displaying the plate is mandatory in the same way displaying an 'L' plate is...

Just another reason to give up my car. Damn I regret wasting thousands on that metal box when I could just ride my bike.:o

@Vampyre, I'm guessing they're not allowed on the motorway in the first year then if they can't go more than 45?

How exactly do you expect BRAKE to make money out of this? Don't be absurd.

This would appear to be the main piece of research on which the suggestion is based: The situational risks of young drivers: The influence of passengers, time of day and day of week on accident rates. I haven't got access to read what it actually says.

Not neccessarily brake but the government will surely profit.

The UK is actually one of the safest countries in the world for road travel. I really don't think we need to be implementing these rules.

Can see it now, young, new drivers, only allowed to drive between 10-4, on weekdays, but not on motorways, with no passengers and not allowed to go over 45 miles an hour.

May aswell ban all new drivers.

These proposed changes are just stupid!

If you are able to pass a UK driving test I see no reason why you should then have restrictions placed on what you can do in a car after you have a full licence.

Ahhh yes, insurance companies intersted in reducing insurance for EVERYONE, pull the other one.

These laws, all about restricting freedom and making money. Sweet F A to do with safety. They just jump on that bandwagon just to justify it.

Totally **** IMO.

It's not often I agree with you, but this post says it all tbh :)

I wonder whether the law of unintended consequences would mean that limiting young drivers to 1 passenger would result in more young drivers buying two seaters?

Next they'll try and put limiters on cars slowing down all your motorways.

The "kids" will ignore it, people will still die due to bad driving.

Unless properly supervised with someone else in the car, it won't change a thing.

Because it's not 8k behind the wheel it says, just road accidents...

I don't know where they got that number from, but <25 drivers make up 1 in 8 of all drivers, but account for 1 in 3 of all drivers killed. Young drivers with passengers are more likely to be involved in fatal accidents, and that effect increases with the number of passengers, and young drivers are more likely to involved in fatal accidents at night.

All these things are true.

The question is whether they justify this policy.

Should restrict new teenage drivers to cars with engines 2L+ :P
Mines slow enough as it is and it's not making my driving any safer! (At least I don't think it is.)

Rubbish rules that would just inconvenience people. Instead they should educate drivers better in the first place and clamp down on drink/drug driving.

Are these really 'proposed laws' or just another fantasy from some idiots at Brake that will be ignored by virtually everyone in government anyway?

I personally do think the law should be changed for all new drivers.

First up anybody that just passed, should be supervised for the first 6 months of driving, to gain some experience before driving on their own, be it Parent,Spouse ect.

Motorway & night driving should be part of driving lessons & test.

Engine size limits on all new drivers for the first 2 years.

Just these 3 things would be enough in my book.

I bet you voted Labour. Pointless, ill thought out kneejerk policies were right up their street.
