e46 m3

I guess a few points I have to add are:

- As the car is a 2005 model, you get a 12 year corrosion warranty.
- Rear springs always seem to snap on these, so it's good you've had them done. Same with the brakes which are £1,000 for a set!
- The subframe issue isn't really a problem so long as the car isn't modified. BMW seem to be very good at repairing broken subframes at no cost.
- The new SMG pump is a real bonus - should be hassle free for the time you own it, and if you do get any problems it will be cheap to fix (there is a £15 relay which can fail). My SMG has been trouble free in the 2 years/15,000 miles I've had my car.
- Servicing is reasonable - usual pattern of Oil-Insp1-Oil-Insp2. Oil = £200; Insp 1 = £700; Insp 2 = £800. Usually around 15,000 miles between services.
- The engines are generally very strong, so fingers crossed, you shouldn't have any issues. Worst case, a new engine is about £2k on eBay!
- Exhaust note can be fixed with an AC Schnitzer exhaust (or if you hate the rasp, you can just get an X-pipe!).

I think that's about it really - mine's been great in the time I've had it. It is fussy about what fuel I use (seems to only really like UK V-Power), but other than that it's been a great car to own.

My only issues have been a broken rear spring and corroded alloys - which cost £400ish to refurbish.

Balls to it, I'll be the unpopular one...

I don't know know a great deal about what's been going on, but you've made reference to hard times recently. If cashflow is an issue, the sensible (imo) thing to do would be to park the M3 idea, sell the smoker privately for as much as possible and buy a 4 seater company friendly snotter to tide you over while you get the Porsche fixed. The extra cash should make it easier to fix the C2S, and then sell that privately too. Then figure out if the cash is there to get something nicer when everything is working (including you!) again...

FWIW I know what it's like, every ******* day has been sunny since I got back to find my car had been nicked, and I've been rolling round in a hearse ever since...

It's ****, but it is the sensible thing to do...

Guess you could learn a lesson from this, have some money lying around as well rather than in cars LOL.

How someone can own £45ks worth of cars and struggle to have £~7-10k lying around is beyond me.

Firstly, great to hear that Porsche might be able to help out. Probably worth noting this people... this is why if you buy a Porsche you

A) Get it from an OPC
B) Always get it serviced at an OPC
C) If you can... renew the warranty !

Regarding an M3, sounds great for a summer blaster, and it should sell on OK I'd imagine. Do I get a feeling however that you didn't 'feel the love' for the S2000?

If you want another car why not take the chance to get a 4 (!?) seat RX7 ... Your quite the fan of RX7's if I remember correctly?

even at the height of my "wealthy periods" I can't remember ever having more than 10k lying around in my bank, that's probably because I can't stand the idea of saving money for a rainy day

he who dies with the most toys wins

faktzzz

See it's that smug oneupsmanship under the pretence of "refreshing honesty" that brings this place down.

Assuming you were brought up and not dragged up, remember your goddamn manners.

If you haven't got the balls to say it in a bar, don't bring it on here.

All i'd say about an E46 M3 is that getting a geo setup on those cars at that age is a MUST.

I nearly wrote my old one off from the curse of the E46 skittery back end (which slips out at the best of times) which was made even worse by a 7-8 year old car having improperly set up suspension stopping the car from sticking to the road as BMW intended.

I was totally put off the M3 and went straight to Porsche so i could feel safe in a car, before i tried the E92 and realised I'd just bought a shonky car the first time around.

I like your style, live life to the max :D

Whilst you may disagree with the way he presented his point, it is a fair one. 'Most' people with that many toys would tend to have savings for a rainy day. Not saying that's the only way to live or that willgill should change his lifestyle (it's not really any of my concern) it's just the sensible option.

Although sensible is often boring :)

Absolutely, the point was sound. It was the condesending kick-a-man-when-he's-down manner that I take issue with. Just unneccesarily rude.

Completely agree with the way you've put your point accross. I've saved/invested/gambled instead of going balls out toys-wise. It was sensible, and it is boring.

The really galling thing is when things go sour anyway, and you don't have the memories of racing/flying/ski-ing/skydiving/etc.

The flip side is that I haven't had to move, and I'm not faced wth having to fire-sell assets for cashflow reasons.

Sensible is a different way, and an alternative to consider when times are rough, but I wouldn't dream of being so rude and arrogant as to laugh at a guy that's had some fun and hit a bad patch.

People that sign up to a deal that would appear to cost an extra five figures in depreciation, in the name of saving four figures on an insurance premium is a bit wtf, but E60-aside, at least Will's had some fun with his...

the other option is to flog the porsche for peanuts (£13250 is the latest offer :() and have some fun with that cash, but I do like the idea of the porka as an almost project car, this cash would get me the replacement block I need (after porsche met me half way ) hence the reason I'm thinking these thoughts :)

Don't sell the Porsche for peanuts, you'd be throwing 10-15k away!

With a new engine you could sell your car based on the fact it has a new engine, they always fetch more money as your car would have the newer 06 onwards revised engine in it as the earlier cars that are pre-06 build had known issues with the engine and yours clearly did as let go.

Drop the money on the 911, get it sold, drive it for 1000-2000 miles to get it run in and enjoyed and then sell it as a decent car with a new engine would fetch well over 30k. Get it done otherwise your throwing huge amounts of money away!

What's the deal with the X51 upgrade? I know nothing about oily bits, but if it needs a new engine, what are the costs involved with replacing broken bits with X51 bits?

Bad luck old boy, hope you get back to the top soon!

Cylinder head cracking is something i read about ages ago:

“The next things to be concerned about are cracked
cylinder heads”, says Steve. “The mounting point for the
hydraulic tappets is a weak point,” he explains. “The
head can crack from the bolted face across to a core
plug. This leads to oil forcing its way into the water
jacket.” So look out for tell-tale signs of contamination in
the coolant. Steve says that they have crack-testing
equipment and examine every head they take off, as a
matter of course. Interestingly, he says that they only ever
find cracks on left-hand heads, even though the castings
are identical. This could well be down to the way the
coolant circulates around the engine.
