What things do you hate about games?

Was thinking about this yesterday and came up with a few things that really annoy me and that I dislike in games. For example:

No subtitles/proper subtitles:
I hate it when games fail at this when it's something that should have been standard a long time ago. Also it's annoying when you can't enable subtitles before you gain control of your character, especially when you were just shown the whole story behind the game and end up missing most because you can't hear it properly...

Unskippable cutscenes and cutscenes you can't pause:
Because someone is bound to start talking to you while watching one (and you haven't been able to put subtitles on yet. Double hate!)

Vehicle parts:
Mako, I'm looking at you.

No manual saves:
Metro 2033 is a good example of a game that should have had manual saves. You end up running out of filters with no way out of it and have to restart the whole chapter.

Missable collectibles:
It's not as if you would have known that by doing x you can't access y later. So the only way you would know is by looking at a guide. I like searching everywhere when playing a game and would like to 100% it without having to use guides to do so first time around.

So what do you hate about/in games?

Pointless collectables for stupid achievements... Oodles of thermos flasks in Alan Wake, why?

Dying unfairly when there was little or nothing I could do to avoid it.

Unlocking hard mode after completing the game. Let me play it from the start dammit!

FPS games where you have to pass a magic line to stop the endless wave of enemies.

They're too easy and short nowadays. I remember playing through Max Payne and it was difficult! had to do the tricker levels many times, why do we now just shoot and blast our way through stupid enemies in 4hrs? I know that it's a tricky point, but I really think that PC games have suffered a massive dumbing down due to games consoles and their target audience. There's no sense of accomplishment in finishing most FPS now, whereas before a lot of the best games were hard. Even the original Half Life required you to think a bit.

I don't mind cutscenes, especially on games with great stories (like Mass Effect for example), but the advertisements at the start of some games can get annoying when you have to watch them every time.

Over-complicated menu systems. DiRT 2 compared to DiRT 1 for example. I'm glad DiRT 3 has adopted something more sensible.

Massive emphasis for graphics over gameplay. Then we still don't get anything that really pushes the latest cards and looks good enough to justify it over the previous generation. I have Metro 2033 in the post though, so maybe I'll take that back soon. Still, things have stagnated in the graphics department, and gameplay hasn't really improved either in a good few years. I don't think visuals on the PC will take a decent leap until the next-gen consoles come out. There's no sense in most developers (which are almost all cross-platform) in making a whole more detailed game just for PC users.

Games that don't pause when I press the guide button, Fifa I'm looking at you.

Games that have music in the pause menu, Fifa I'm looking at you.

Difficulty: When they give you just one difficulty at the beginning...And then you unlock hard. I mean I understand unlocking Insane modes and professional modes. But give me Easy, Medium and Hard to begin with!!

Those impossible to jump over teeny tiny walls: Oh yes you know the ones i mean, You're playing a game, you wanna go left...But theres a log in your way. That's okay I'll just jump over it. OH NO YOU WONT, THIS IS A MAGIC LOG.

YES

The Witcher 1+2 and the Bioware games in particular suck for this.

With PC games I don't like the textures being crap.
The likes of F1 2010 would look far better if the car and ground textures were higher resolution.

For consoles, I dislike loading times. The likes of GT5 are slow and irritating.

Dumbing down of great series. (Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six)

Rehashed games.

Lazy ports.

Pre-order bonuses and day one or week two DLC.

Patches bother me as well. Remember the days when developers used to make a game and it just worked? Patches which improve the game are fine, but i feel its just lazy if you release a game with bugs/glitches and just think ah screw it we'll just patch it later.

F1 2010 was a disaster for this, clearly the game had no testing prior to release and single player was completely broken. Traded it in because of this and wont be buying the next one.

Retarded randoms that can't seem to work out that running in there didn't work the first 20 times

So many times have I seen someone run back to the same spot where they died only for them to die again the exact same way, which then just repeats until we lose the match.

What is this showing me ?

Fairly obvious if you watch the final killcam.

Games that auto-save and then 10 seconds later, lead you to a load of ammo/weapons etc that you then have to re-collect and re-arm each time you die.

Or on a lighter-hearted note: When you hear "I just need a minute to open this door. Can you hold them off untill then?"

Hand holding. Sure, teach me the basics at the beginning but then let me work.things out for myself. Hand holding seems to be a very modern thing. The only game where I felt the developer had enough faith in me to use my brain this gen is Demon's Souls.

Ugh, yes. Sadly it's just going to become more common. Worst is when you got say two different pre-order bonuses and have to choose.

I have actually never pre-ordered a game. Do you have to pay for it?

Also just thought about games where you have loot but no real system to it. Like no easy comparison, navigation or nowhere to store items you want to keep.

I'm also not a huge fan of swimming. And I hate games with dodgy cameras. Currently playing GTA IV and getting real annoyed that every time I enter a car it zooms down as if I want to look under the car

Yea. At least in games like Bioshock the tapes add to the story or the bobbleheads in Fallout give you stats.
