Accidentally smashed my Advent Vega - what to buy now?

Each to their own I guess. I personally find the iPad to be an exercise in marketing and compromises. It has no ambition, it's designed to lock you into a controlled and restricted environment that exists to wring money out of their users/customers.

It's nice to use, it has a brilliant UI that is ultimately intuative but what it makes up in style and user friendlyness it loses in substance.

Stepping away from Apple has been a brilliant choice and not having to pander to the restrictions and bloat of iTunes was for me utterly liberating.

On my iPod Touch I always had to convert my videos to an iPod format - do I still have to do it?
My Samsung Galaxy accepts anything without conversion.

Yep... same as it's always been. And the streaming option doesn't float, because the moment you move out of signal/reception then you can no longer watch it...

And with that lack of restrictions, you get more instability and less companies willing to make software, as it's not guaranteed to run on all platforms.

Also people seem to forget that iTunes is more. Than a sync service. It allows you to buy media, something that you can not do on heroic at the moment (other than samsung), I'm sure a lot of you don't have a problem with that due to torrents. But some of us actually want a device we can use for intended use and use it legally.

Many people also have no interest in customisation. Me for one, i want a mobile device to just work, I have a pc if I want to have a play.

If you give people too much freedom, they generally break things.

Remember the big picture here, not what computer nerds want. I love how people make it out to be some kind of Nazi regime, its bordering on crazy. :p

Clearly I meant for around the house where you do have connection.

CineXPlayer will take and play your videos in their native formats. I'll be using it on the flight home as I can't be arsed converting for the Videos.app

That's an utterly spurrious argument. I've not heard of a single person bricking/breaking their android devices through tinkering. The state of the 'wonderful magical amazing' Apple reality bubble is crazy...

Its pretty similar to the bubble Google are offering, they just haven't figured out how to sell it properly.

That or they can't offer it properly yet due to compatibility issues.

You talk as if people that use the Apple ecosystem are idiots, they aren't. They are using probably the best gathering of technology available at this present time. It might not be the cheapest, but you get what you pay for.

eh? what compatibility issues? I have a device that is quite successfully both a netbook and a tablet, I can plug almost anything I like into it, including portable hard drives, USB drives and games controllers. It will take a full sized SD directly from my DSLR and allow me to review RAW images. I can drag and drop pretty much any media format onto it and have it instantly work. I have a micro SD for added storage and it is also compatible with the new high capacity SDs 64GB+.

Yes Google has some 'image' issues but the product is not the issue, it's the marketing itself. Ironically with Apple it's the other way around IMO.

I have never inferred that Apple users are idiots, Apple does that enough already. With Apple product you get something that is beautiful, has an amazing UI and it just works. The unfortunate effect of that is that it is unable to evolve beyond it's initial implimentation. Android and Google in many ways do what they can to nurture the evolution of their product. A good example of this is that HTC have recently stated that they will be releasing all their future devices with their bootloaders unlocked to encourage modding. SE are doing the same thing.

Apple products are brilliant when they first get introduced but then they tend to fall behind pretty rapidly IMO. I find the call that you get what you pay for with Apple to be somewhat spurrious also, you pay a premium for the label.

Of course this is all just my opinion.

I strongly disagree, and this is coming from someone who really likes Android.

From your perspective... but the Transformer will be the utter mutts for a massive group of people ;)
The OS/ecosystem is far less relevant here, the most compelling selling point is the hardware combination.
(tbh I'd be happy with Ubuntu and no 'tablet' option if it got me a £400 high quality IPS netbook with a true 15 hour+ battery life :p)

That's peaked my interest, what's the image viewer/performance like? I always thought image viewing/manipulation would fall under NEONs instruction set. Is the base VFPv3 really good enough to handle RAW output?

I mean compatibility issues with things like apps, I'm not denying that Android based stuff can generally do more; it can.

I believe at this moment in time tablets are used mainly for these things - the web browser, multimedia and apps.

There is nothing really wrong with Apple prices either, they aren't generally much higher and the resale value holds a lot better if you like to upgrade often.

Totally right! Check out this amazing video from 1994 :)

(Personally I want the ~2001 Microsoft concept which places more emphasis on productivity/business use, the transformer/Honeycomb gets v.close)

Sorry if this has been answered already in the thread, but what do you mainly want to use it for?

And more importantly what problems or drawbacks did you feel you had with the vega, maybe then we could let you know if the transformer or other tablet would better it...

iPad is great for business use as well. Exchange ActiveSync with Remote Wipe, Enterprise class device management, and custom profiles to enforce specific settings. Various business apps such as Salesforce available as well. You also have various office suites to choose from.

1) Web browsing (excellent on Vega)
2) RSS feeds (excellent on Vega)
3) Video playing without converting (excellent on Vega)
4) Streaming from my NAS (excellent on Vega)
5) Taking on stage and being used as a lyrics book (excellent on Vega)
6) Reading PDF's (excellent on Vega)

7) Being able to see the screen from more angles than the single angle of the Vega (rubbish on Vega)
8) Being able to play Guitar Pro files (Guitar Partner on android does work)

9) Being able to use software/hardware like this - http://www.ikmultimedia.com/amplitubeipad/features/ (no such thing on Android) On second thoughts with all the amps/pedals/computer based interfaces I already have do I really need this and the answer is no.
10) Being able to use several music programs that are not released on Android. Again do I really need this and the answer is no
