I'm a bit out of touch, could somebody spec me?

Hello there,

I'm currently plonking away on a system from 2005;

1.8ghz Opteron 165,
2gb of RAM
NVidia 9700GT
500gb WD HDD
74gb WD Raptor
... And a whole host of other outdated crap, sigh!

I've come into a minor amount of cash and am looking to spend £400 - £500 on a system (have a monitor, a lovely 22" Dell IPS panel) and the rest.

Just wondered if anybody had some spec suggestions as I'm a bit out of touch with it all these days! And, on a side note, am looking to get a small-ish case, I am exceptionally fed up of my gigantic Antec P180 tower!
On another side note, any idea how much I might get for my current set up? Maybe £150?

You got any SATA HDDs or DVD drives you can keep or you looking to sell it as a whole?

Oh and what are your main uses? Gaming? Video/image/audio editing?

Yeah, have two DVD drives and two SATA HDDs, can easily keep them. Quite content to just break my rig up and sell each part.

@Cookeh - Not a lot to be frank, I used to game a lot but not so much these days, just need something that will play HD video alright and well, that's about it! I don't do any photo/video/audio editing of any type so don't really need a CPU powerhouse

This would easily play HD video - 1080p runs perfectly fine as well.

amd llano should be released very very soon so would be tempted to hang off until its out.

Zacate is a great option for a htpc at the mo.

Not bad, the HDD will be slower than a granny out for a sunday drive though!

GT430 is about on parallel with the onboard in the spec I linked tbh

This would be another alternative, with HD3000 onboard graphics - will cope with older games at a medium level:

Oh that's alright re: the hard drive. I think I am going to keep my ageing 74gb Raptor for the time being until I can shell out for an SSHD.

I would swap the PSU with a XFX Core 550W.

'Green' drives are slow, which maybe fine depending an what you want to use it for.

Not sure what kind of games you are planning on playing, but the GT430 is really low range.

The Sugo PSU wont cut it with a 5830. Just too much power, they draw almost the same as 5850's.

My 955BE and a HD6870 don't even draw 250W - think it will cope with that setup! :eek:
