New MG restricted to 120mph, gets lower group rating, thoughts?

I remember watching a BBC documentary quite a few years ago where 4 cars were setup with large A, B, C & D on their roofs.
They went on the motorway for 1 hour and car A could only stay in the 1st lane, B in lane 2, C in the outside lane and D could go anywhere.
At the end of the hour D won by about 30 seconds and the difference between D and A was about 2 minutes over the hour.
I don't know why I bother being a C or mostly D and breaking the law some of the time.
I remember that. Doesn't stop me from doing it though :D
I know that my aggressive driving just wastes money in petrol and wear and tear (gear changes, bla bla). I just can't sit in one lane behind a lorry doing 50mph everywhere. I literally fall asleep.

FWIW, when I was in Norway, I remember overtaking a car (doing the speed limit) about 30 miles before the ferry on rural roads in the fjords.
The limit was 80km/h, and I was probably averaging 90-100.

It took me a little over half an hour, and the dude I overtook turned up to the ferry about 6 minutes after me. All that extra fuel spent driving faster and overtaking for 6 minutes. And we both caught the same boat...

And you guys wonder why I just whack the cruise onto 70 and sit back on and relax on the Motorway whilst pushing almost 40mpg?

A motorway is a bit different to a caravan towing car vs sports car on twisty roads. Easy 25% quicker without breaking the speed limit

Yes I will overtake the caravan and yes more than likely somewhere on that journey I'll probably see that same vehicle behind me.
Totally pointless but I still do it.

I know why, I know that it makes **** all difference.
I just don't have the patience.

The rest of my journey was on motorway and I didn't go over 80, I don't bother going any quicker, my aim on motorways is to drive without needing to brake ever, I do it on twisty roads and is one of the reasons I hate being behind idiots.

People who almost stop on clear roundabouts. People who brake going downhills and even more annoying is people who brake whilst going up a hill for no real reason!

I managed about 32-33 Mpg this weekend which isn't too bad for the car, decent progress due to rarely needing to brake for corners and no way of a caravan ever catching up. Lol at the thought of that.

You wouldn't actually know how far that caravan is away though if you're on a windy road.
You get past it, speed up for a bit, come behind other vehicles that slow you down, overtake, speed up a bit, get behind vehicles that slow you down and so on and in the end that caravan isn't that far behind you.
I do exactly the same as you but I know I'm stupid.

You have to time it so you catch people on straights :p. It was 70 miles of the A5, great road.

You're right though. I overtook a trailer twice, second time was on the motorway after mcdonalds.

Depends what road I`m on, but if im doing 45-60 (in national) i`m fairly happy to cruise control at that speed. If its dropping to 30-40 in a national that can be driven at 70-80mph (ie A414), then I will look to pass. I dont like overtaking on the wrong side of the road, just hate the feeling of a car rapidly approaching head-on.

It wouldn't surprise me if cars are auto-restricted to the speed limits within the next 10 years when gps and the maps are improved. Some sort of system that allows you to floor it on private land, but limit your speed on public roads. The Nissan gtr has a very similar system iirc.

Posting a negative response to a 100/120mph limiter is a never going to go down well. You'll either be branded a boasting bull****** that you need that speed, an irresponsible nutjob who should be limited to a '89 Uno or a bad driver with judgement and patience issues. I don't place myself in any of those categories (surprise!) but I'd not consider limiting my car...not for a reduction, not for free insurance for life. I want the ability to do a 100+ and I use the ability to do a 100+, overtaking or not. A Picasso drivers opinion or outlook from the other side of the fence is not going to change that.

The Bandit

Has this been limited because the engine isn't going to give much more and 120mph seems like a round figure to do it at?

But who is going to buy one of these anyway???

Seriously, who????

MG6, old people, boy racers?

It may be largish but offers nothing over its rivals and I will hazzard a guess at poor residuals making PCP finance more expensive than some more expensive alternatives. Unless they subsidise the cars / finance.

Skoda Octavia vRS @ £17500 on broadspeed or this? @ £18999

As for the 120mph limit, looking forward to what Top Gear make of it. I would fully support sub 100mph limits for cars in the UK which can be lifted on tracks or the continent.

I can't remember the last time I drove over 100mph, so yes I'd be happy to do this (yes, my car can do 100mph!). If I lived in or did a lot of driving in Germany, then no.

The £19k model includes Satnav etc, there are cheaper models without this.

But agreed, cannot see the market for it.

As per another thread of mine, a month ago I collected:

Octavia vRS 2.0T Hatch
Metallic Paint
Full Leather Interior
Heated Seats
Rear Parking Sensors
Xenon Lights
Auto-Dimming Mirror/Light Assist
Sat-Nav
MaxiDot Dashboard Upgrade

This cost me £20k.

Dunno - maybe that £19k MG will be something amazing (although the reviews so far so its nothign special).
But I'd hope anyone looking at the MG along side what I picked up would make the sensible choice.
