Front brake pads and the pusher fan and housing.

How long do you intend to keep the car for?
Had it about 9 months now, probably going to keep if for another 2 years at least I would have thought.

The Volvo I sold with 190k is still going strong with a clear MOT and it's had no work apart from a service.

2003 BMW 325i Sport Touring

Power Steering Pump

How long do you intend to keep the car for?
Until it's run into the ground! I bought it from a BMW technician who had bought it from a customer when the autobox failed at 140,000 miles. He replaced it and sold it on for a profit (to me) and it's barely missed a beat since.

Wow, normally people only read the thread title and not the posts within - this must be a first - didn't read title but read the posts. :p

What car is it? - 1998 e36 BMW 318iS

What mileage are you currently on? - A few days ago I hit:

176,408miles

What major parts have you replaced? - Exhaust rear section, front brake calipers - done shortly after getting the car. A wheel bearing 5 months ago. Car has been owned by me since start August 2010 and done over 10kmiles since. I did give it a service when I got it, but now it needs another.

How long do you intend to keep the car for? - Until it falls to pieces

Very similar to me!

What car is it? - 1997 e36 BMW 318iS

What mileage are you currently on? 171,000

What major parts have you replaced? - Exhaust rear section, one coolant pipe that split, thermostat (not that major).

Need to replace the DISA valve and an ABS sensor next.

How long do you intend to keep the car for? Until I can afford a nice well-kept example of the e36 328i Sport.

3. Whilst some crazy fool thought it was worth over 30k back when I was in my second year of uni, I picked it 7 years later (2005 - 85,000) for just over 1k. Mmmmm depreciation :). That price was because the owner suspected a head gasket failure and bailed after just putting some new exhaust bits on, but I knew it was just an oil cooler. So i fixed it up for a few hundred quid then had a car still only worth about 2.5k.

It's had cambelt when I bought it and another one recently, crankshaft sensor, rear springs (one broke), alignment, and that's it other than consumables.

Oh how could I forget 'the big one'! Slight valves meeting pistons episode. Not the usual cambelt failure (though it was due so i was kicking myself for not doing it earlier until I realised the actual cause), but something I'd never heard of before - a camshaft pulley bolt had actually loosened, the pulley moved over towards its neighbour, said hello there, much grinding, then finally they mesh like gears and stop, cambelt looses several teeth and engine stops. Luckily I got away with it on the other bank of the vee, so only needed a single head swap - all sorted for a couple of hundred quid. I'll never know if a previous owner had been messing with that pulley bolt or whether it was done up last in the factory.

4. So - super cheap near-prestige motoring for 6 years. All the toys still work except for driver's seat heating. I'll keep it until I can't resist upgrading to an old 7-Series or S-Class :) Aaaaaaah old luxo-barges. I'll never ever ever understand why people drop 10k+ (or worse finance 10k+) on a new Corsa/Focus or whatever pile of boring crap, but each to their own and all that. Yes I only get 37 mpg max, but it cost me nowt - I still win economically :)

I generally class it as something comfy and enjoyable, anything but a small rotbox basically. I understand where you're coming from though, a 600 is hardly an A6, but comfort wise it was lovely.

None

How long do you intend to keep the car for?

Forever baring major expense.

Impressive, sounds like its been on the motorway a lot

I'd list my '93 LPG 216 but its not on the road.
I'll keep it if petrol keeps going up, which seems likely so that justifys the effort I guess, the gas parts fitted are worth more then the car :D

Oldest car continuous ownership I know of is a Nissan 200sx kept locally and totally unmodded. It was in use back in the early nineties and they still have it 20 years later.
No coincidence that a few of them are on this thread then

You've replaced the engine 7 times?

Yes, original blew it's head gasket. Rebuilt it but it had a cracked head, cheaper to get second hand engines so I just got a few and they were all bad ones...

In the end went for a better engine, I did blow that one up and got another which has lasted well :p

Look - can all you 90k+ wannabes (and that 50k complete joker) just get the hell outta this exclusive club :) :)

***** prestige is where it's at Liam, my last was a 196,000 mile Rover 620ti - nice and quick, comfy and cost £180.

I love Omegas, probably the only Vauxhall I'd own. :D

Yeah for sure. Great car really - last decent Vauxhall (unless you count the Holdens) anyway. I still get into new econo-box hire cars and such like nowadays and find they feel cheap, badly put together, and I dont like the steering.

Although it's better specced and as well built as a 5-series of its day, I'd still just about hesitate to say I'm into ***** prestige here :) As much as I couldn't care less about badges - Vauxhall and prestige... no - can't! :) Now the Series 3 XJ6 me, my dad and bro had a while back is a different matter - not hugely ***** though - it actually had some value that did, unlike the meega.

I'm worried that the days of ***** prestige may soon be over though :(. I'd like an E38 7-Series or W220 S-Class next (cos your car really does need double glazing), and although I'm not remotely scared of engine, gearbox, suspension work myself, and 'normal' electrical work, I'm increasingly worried about just getting 'computer says no' errors with no recourse but to bend down and be raped by a main dealer so your replacement driveshaft can be 'activated' or something. I can see it coming, if it hasn't already arrived. I just wonder if they'll have a strong online community of enthusiasts (like, for some reason, the Omega has) who can hack if neccessary, or is a 'classic' old S-class simply not going to exist in the future? I guess I'll have to do my research before jumping in.
