How much arse do you kiss?

Why is it called arse-kissing/licking? When has anyone ever had to kiss another person's arse? Why would anyone ask someone to do that? This sounds like some bizarre fetish which has somehow made it into the everyday lexicon.

No, I don't have to - I'm well liked by management because I'm good at my job and I'm a helpful, reasonable, rational, well-mannered employee. But that's what I'm like outside work too, so it isn't something I have to make a conscious effort over.

Pretty much this tbh

I don't kiss arse, but if the big boss needs a hand with something then will help out and maybe go a bit out of my way to do so. It's handy at pay review time.

Never. But I'd like to take this moment to compliment the Dons on the awesome job they do running this forum.

No need to suck up to anyone, I do my job well and receive respect from bosses and colleagues as a result, it's usually the shirkers that feel they need to do the sucking up.

I would never expect our current or future staff to "kiss arse". All I ask is that they respect the company and their position within it; do the job to the best of their ability; conduct themselves with honesty and integrity at all times and not be afraid to make their opinions known to the management if they feel there is something we could be doing better/differently as a company.

However, we're a small company. I can imagine, in a larger organisation, where your immediate superiors are on roughly the same level as you, the whole thing could turn into a popularity contest where 'sucking up' is necessary. We're really trying to avoid creating that kind of corporate environment here.
