New Syndicate to be an FPS

I bet this is nothing like the original. Bet the main dude you play as doesn't even wear a trenchcoat.

Who cares anyway any true fan of the franchise would rather load up dosbox than play it in FPS form simply because it'll be designed for the console masses who don't even know what Syndicate is.

New XCom game is going to be an FPS too. /sigh

Give it a few months, EA will be re-making Civilization as an FPS too...

It's a little early to be demanding heads on spikes in my opinion. You can do a lot with first person these days; as Bullfrog themselves were demonstrating years ago with Magic Carpet.

Frankly I'm more concerned about the "strong multiplayer focus". Does that mean a campaign that's no more than a tutorial leading to the "proper" multiplayer part? That would be a far more bitter pill for me to swallow. In fact I doubt I'd bother buying it at all.

I'm confused as to how making it an FPS will make any difference to the game what so ever.

I mean in some cases yes I can get behind the "consolification" of games but honestly I think you lot are jumping the gun a touch here.

Why? It's an isometric viewpoint strategy game, it's not an FPS game.

I don't get why every game has to be a bloody FPS these days.

oooooh i feel a tingling for this already

strong multiplayer? does this mean you can start your own corporation and take over the world? ocuk to take over the world :)

It can still be a strategy game as a 3D FPS, just the view point has changed. Just because it's a FPS, doesn't mean it'll be another Quake or something as FPS is just a generic term bandied about for games in that viewpoint. Even stuff like Dues Ex is often called a FPS. If it keeps the basic core elements of squad management and a requirement for tactical thinking then changing the viewpoint has little affect. I wouldn't even be surprised if it retained an eye in the sky type view from some sort of air support.

Not enough info yet to make a call either way.

Indeed. See Sanctum, or the Ghost Recon series, etc.

I don't understand how you can't see how completely changing the genre of a franchise is anything other than a massive difference?

What's next? Starcraft IV FPS, Total War FPS, CIV VI FPS?

What is the point in reviving a series nearly two decades old if you're not making a true sequel? The kids of today won't remember the original, and those who'd remember it fondly will just be *****off when you change the most fundamental aspect of the game.

But we don't actually know if they're changing the genre, they've only said that they're changing the viewpoint to first person.
We managed to pull off a great genre mix in Riddick, with shooting, sneaking, fighting, and dialogue, but there was no real core mechanic that differentiated it from other games. Now we are trying to differentiate ourselves more.
It's this quote here that fills me with hope that it's ultimately just Syndicate with all the original game mechanics but in first person.

This is as bad as the new XCOM game being an FPS. Very sad.
Yes we haven't seen it yet but changing the viewpoint is a big enough change to anticipate a huge difference in gameplay.

As a proportion of the potential player base, how many people do you think will remember the original game. Probably not very many, therefore it needs to be made to seem more interesting than a top down game, and market forces dictate that FPS is the most popular look nowadays.
