Car Black Boxes

no idea, I just pop the memory card out, you can set it so it only every records emergency events (you manually press the button) or specific shock related events (you set the thresholds) so if that's all you want to record it will fit your requirements. I shoved a 32gb card in mine and record everything in HD on continuous loop, if someone watched it back it would be boody funny, most of the time I'm singingalong to def leppard :p

Out of interest, what's it like at night?

One of these would have saved my NCB and excess when I had a shunt that went 50/50 due to lack of evidence or witnesses.

very tempting !

Stick that in the same place the monaro owner did - in front of the rear view mirror on the passenger side, and i doubt any driver would have any clue its there.

Equally, i doubt anybody would spot it should you be involved in an accident. Leaving it up to you to tell people you had a video recorder going or not.

I am going to take a BikeSafe course this year because I wish to learn more.

I think it's just about experience, I did a CSM advanced rider and a bike safe course and they teach you to be very very defensive, I've driven 7.5t lorries with airside passes and trailers, vans, bikes, cars, forklifts, 360s, dumpers etc etc and all the experience gives me a better understanding of what another road user is capable of.

Do the courses it really helps :)

I do lots of driving and have never had a fault claim. Why are you different?

I often wonder this as well. Some people seem prone to 'non fault' accidents if that makes sense.

I remember the IAM once saying that something stupid like 80% of non-fault accidents are avoidable by the non-blame party.
When the day comes that you return to your car and find it's been damaged, you might remember those arrogant quotes.

Not all claims involve being behind the wheel. However as far as insurance is concerned, I may as well have wrapped my car round a tree.

No witnesses and the person drove off.

But then loads of those can be avoided as well, like that guy on here who parked his car at the bottom of a snow packed hill and wondered why somebody slid down the hill into his car.

Does that really go down as a fault claim? I appreciate it's coming off your own insurance but surely there is a distinction between being at fault and claiming because someone else ran off?

Yes it does. To an insurance company fault = 'we had to pay and couldnt recover it from somebody else'.

Fair enough, seems a touch unfair to lump people who come back to a damaged car in with people who caused an accident.

They both cost the insurer money.

The insurer is only interested in that.

They dont particularly want 'safe' drivers, just drivers who dont cost them money.

1: Returned to my 3 week old car to find someone had reversed into both passenger side doors. No note, CCTV or anything. Accident counts as a fault claim.

2: A month after getting my car repaired, in a shopping centre car park I return to my car to find some tool had parked their vehicle inches from my passenger side and opened their door into my car. Waited for them to return to get details, got details, and owner eventually admits liability. Later owner denied liability. However took to court and eventually won. (Thank god I took loads of detailed photos at the time). Non fault claim.

3: 6 months later, after working late, I return to my car to find someone has used my car to get over a wall. Walking up my bonnet and onto the roof. No CCTV, no evidence. Classed as a fault claim.

So within the space of a year I have 3 accidents and two fault claims. I had 8 years no claims.

Sucks.

Yeah but from a risk perspective, someone who has cost them money because they caused an accident is surely a completely different proposition to someone who cost them money by returning to a damaged car?

I'd have just expected more distinction given how intricately they seek to calculate potential risk from other factors.

Progressive insurance here do a black box thing for reduced premiums I think.

I wouldn't mind tbh, most of my driving consists of enter freeway, hit cruise control, brake 100 miles later to exit freeway :p No point whatsoever in ragging it.

It actually sounds quite interesting - apparently you load it up on your PC and elect to submit it after it tells you if it will reduce your premium.

I really like the look of that camera and might invest in one. I'd quite like to point it backwards for all the ****s in Audi's hanging off my bumper on the M11 while they are on the phone when I'm passing a line of nose to tail lorrys.
