Meh... Vauxhalls

I'm happy taking front wheel off if needed so that I can post it through the boot space.

Just a 2.2 SE.

Get on z22se.co.uk (think thats right).

Loads of useful advice, they can also be taken to 180bhp~ for fairly cheap. But doubt yourintrested in that.

They burn oil pretty quickly, also the timing chain isn't the most reliable but I had no problems with mine as long as the oil is kept up.

Dad used to have an Omega Estate MV6 with all the extras and that thing was superb. Looked went and sounded fab. Sure it wallowed a little around corners but it was a fantastic motorway cruiser and your could pack half of Berkshire into the boot. It also never let him down over 6 years.

Is that your motor?

No its not, this one is mine. Its the very basic 2.2 SE, its kind of a shame it doesnt have the 17" wheels and rear spoiler as they really finish off the look of the car. Unfortunately it just isnt worth enough to justify adding them.

I notice someone commented on their oil use as well, this is a problem I'm having so watch it like a hawk. I'm currently getting through the best part of a liter every 800ish miles. Luckily 5 liters of oil for this motor is only £20 from halfords so its not costing me much to keep it topped up. Even at there standard 145bhp they dont lounge around. 0-60 is done in 8 seconds and they carry on to around 135. I quite like it as a car, I would even say its handling is fairly capable. Its just very dull and has no feel whatsoever. It seems to be able to take corners quicker than my modified Yaris could but you get no real feedback through the steering whilst its doing it so it never inspires the confidence to really press on.

Yes I am aware of it. But as I dont do many miles 5 liters of oil lasts me quite some time and its only costing an extra £20 in running costs every 4000 miles or so :P Compare that to high 3 figures / low 4 figures for an engine rebuild and it seems daft to worry about it.

Wont need a full rebuild, prob just piston rings. If it did need rebuilt itd be cheaper to swap out for another engine. Joy of the vaux market :)

Possibly, but even thats not a cheap job compared to £40s worth of oil a year :p The cars barely worth £1200 these days. Its why I'm planning to change it soon.

Same problem I had, had my dad and a lot of his friends look at it. Their answer - keep it topped up son and it ill be fine.

And again my biggest gripe, it has no steering feel at all. You feel scared going into some corners as it can just feel so disconnected at times it was almost frightening.

O and it does a tad more than 135 ;)

Jeremy Clarkson doesn't like Vauxhalls, so I don't. To suggest that they're good cars means one of two things:
a) you haven't driven any cars other than Vauxhalls to know what a good car feels like
b) you don't know how to drive like a real motor enthusiast

IMO, Jeremy clarkson is an arrogant, celebrity muppet who really knows nothing - he just likes to think he does. Fifth Gear is the way forward for factual reviews, Top Gear is just humerous entertainment.

THe problem in this thread is that there are too many people blirting out opinion as if it were fact.

:D I like your hypocritical post there.

I think Vauxhaull in general make fairly ok cars, nothing too terrible, but nothing very good either. I reckon for the same price you can get a better car from a different manufacturer in pretty much all of their range.

Hehe good spot. I'll add a big bold "IMO".

Vauxhall in my opinion generally make good but bland cars. Their hot versions are full of character and far from dull, yes some may see the madness and characteristics of some of the hot cars a complete turn off and a good reason to look at something else but I love it and I've owned hot Vauxhalls for 3 years now.

First I had a 300bhp Astra VXR

Now a 400bhp Monaro VXR

Vauxhall may not make particularly good cars but nor do they make particularly bad cars (with the odd exception) and there are other manufacturers out there that make worse cars that take less crap on here. It seems to be becoming fashionable on Ocuk to bash Vauxhalls. "If I **** a Vauxhall off I'll be in with the cool kids". Sadly for me it's becoming a bit repetitive now and I find myself posting less and less.
