Girlfriend not able to drink... what do?

Google reveals quite a few people with the problem, experiencing headaches/migraines within an hour or sooner of drinking alcohol, I suggest you have a read through those. A couple of which boil down to the fact that the person is allergic to something in the alcohol.

Interesting! I'm off to work in a bit, and she's on campus till later, but I'll look more into that later.

I'm not meant to drink either. I've totally ignored that medical advice though and carried on as normal so can't really help. Though that being said, I've been booked in for an ultrasound on my liver so I may cut down after the results of them.

However, your band is pretty good.

I'm 26 and havnt been able to drink alcohol for the last 5 years as my liver goes funny if i do.

At first i found it really hard and annoying not being able to drink but just used to it now and it doesnt bother me at all when out with friends or the wife and their drinking, i just stick to soft drinks and non alcoholic drinks.

If she can drink then she'll just eventually get used to it over time.

Where do you go out on the Wirral, btw? I am also on the Wirral!

EDIT:

Wow, just clicked your link to your band on facebook and there are photos there of some people that I know (in the place that I usually drink)! What a small world!

Do what Dr.House would do.

Give her an alcohol free drink but tell her it's alcoholic and see if she still gets the headaches, if she does then it's psychological (it's never lupus.)

I suggested that, saying 'I'll do it with you', and she said she'd feel guilty about it.

what would you expect her to say ?, just tell her it ain't a problem, you just want you both to have a good night out.

as mentioned may be worth checking with the docs to see if she was tested for allergies.

Unfortunately it's not that the doctor's told her she can't, it's that the crippling headaches have :(

And thanks :p

Well that's good to hear, like I say, I'm sure she'll get used to it over time, it's just particularly unfair, as uni life is very focused on drinking, and I think she's worried she'll be left out.

I'm at uni at the moment, so I don't :p

When I'm home, I tend to go to the White Lion or the Railway, or knock about places in WK.

What alcohol does she drink? Try different ones over a few weeks. Go for vodka one night, rum the next, whisky the next, beer another etc See if it is one form of alcohol. Could it be that she likes her alcohol+energy drink? They send me into a foul mood and I just can't end up getting drunk on them.

More like small country. :p

We're both 20, and we're about to finish our exams in second year of uni. Obviously, drinking is somewhat of a big part of the post-exam plans for students, so naturally, she's rather upset about this, and it is very much a life changing thing.

Shouldn't have to be. It's everyone elses problem and not hers tbh. Just try to be supportive is all I could say, there's plenty to do without booze.

A silly question here but does high caffine food & drinks cause the migrains too?
could just be dehydration.

Some people suffer low hydration levels and need to take in extra water all the time.... coffee, redbull & alcohol are all dehydration causes.... That's why people get hangovers.

Might be worth a try to drink say 2-3 litres of water a day, then at night just have one glass of alcohol to try - see what happens or you can get somthing called "Dioralyte Relief" it's not a drug you can get it off the shelf in Asda or Tesco it's just a helps the body absorb more water...

Worth a try..... Failing that it might be worth thinking if she can't drink then you should stop drinking around her...... this will show your supporting her thinking of her feelings

one good thing to say, by the time's she's 50 the no alcohol life will make her look 30 still LOL....MILF :-)

GET OVER IT! I had a serious accident at 17 and cant drink. Does it bother me? Nope. Im always sober and can drive etc.... This works for me as I love driving. I dont see why people get soo excited about going out ad spending £100 on drink and not having anything to show for it bar a headache. Each to their own!

My friend Wilf is allergic to alcohol, and he's usually the life of the party! It helps him being the DJ usually i suppose. People shouldnt need alcohol to have fun, all it does is lower inhibitions, which makes it easier to have fun. But its not the only way to have fun. I go out sober quite often, as I backup my friend on the decks. And its generally an awesome time...Maybe being single helps make the night more fun though :p

If she's really that worried about not being able to drink, then there might be a psychiatric issue that needs addressing. Geez. It's just booze.
