Have I gone OTT with fans in my case?

you havent gone overboard.

your friend clearly doesn't know what they are talking about.

poor choice of CPU cooler though tbh

Was a impulse buy from ocuk when it was £35.99, thinking of getting the H80 or should I just stay away from these closed water system?

what cpu coolers would you suggest for ease of installation/performance and ram accessability?

well, any cpu cooler is easy to install. they wouldnt sell otherwise.
specifically for ram accessability, you would have to go for a simple tower cooler such as the megahalems or venX.

stay away tbh. a h80 will perform only a little better than this h50.
i would look at a nice high end air cooler, something like a bequiet darkrock pro or noctua nhd14

from my testing, the Prolimatech geneisis is amazing. i would have that if i used air cooling. you already have the fans so the cooler would be a lot cheaper than the H80.

So why do OCUK overclocked systems use them?

The "Titan Spinosaur" for example.

because they are excellent for shipping complete systems in transit and avoid courier damage.
can't knock them for system integration use at all, they are superb in that aspect.
they do the job, but this is an enthusiast forum.
people who buy complete systems tend not to be hardware enthusiasts. or want a system that 'just works'
for the end user who builds/configures/tweaks their own system its best to get the bang for buck option that allows maximum headroom and potential.
thats just how i see it anyway, im sure you would agree.

I don't suppose you know how this would perform in a case 'without' a top venting fan rjk?

Don't worry if you can't give a definitive answer it's just that i'm on the verge of buying a Silver Arrow for my second system - but I the like engineering design of the Prolimatech geneisis. But it looks as though it has a top venting case fan in mind?...

This is why i suggest H50/60 etc for friends builds with the intention of LANs - no more broken sockets/knackered gfx from the HS breaking loose.

unfortunately not. i have seen them working well in cases like the HAF 912+ and the Silverstone Fortress FT01. basically any case with large positive airflow.
hope this helps?

exactly. they certainly have a place in the market but i do think they are overpriced and underperform given what else is on offer.

Yes it has and thanks for confirming what you could, appreciated.

I think i should stick with the Silver Arrow, as I know this will complement my case. Plus i'm finding it hard to source a Prolimatech Genesis from a supplier i trust - will OcUK be stocking these at some point?

When i upgrade my 2nd rig's case, probably to another Silverstone Fortress or Lian Li, i'll order the Pro Gen at the same time as I really i like the ingenuity of the cooling design and from reviews, and your hands on experience, it should enable me to have silent running (undervolting the 2 x 14cm fans).
