New M5 official specifications here

wouldnt be surprised if the new M5 had some kind of special map that detects the behaviour of the EU test and spooled the turbos down or something.

I would be suprised as surely that is cheating and they'd get in a fair bit of trouble for it.

They must have the prove the car that is tested is exactly the same as the one that goes on sale. If peoples M5's start detuning themselfs just cause they accelerate up to 60mph slowly then stay there for 20 seconds then they would kick off big time.

Until you go above 25% throttle and the engine request for power is met just like any other calibration ;)

I would be amazed if this whole thing was true. Any proof/source that anything like this has ever been done before? Let alone to get a £70k~ super saloon into a slightly lower tax bracket to save someone a few hundred quid a year?

Johnny will know better how they achieve it.

But everybody cheats in these tests. The whole industry knows it. Its why you can't ever hope to match the combined MPG figure on modern ED bmws.

BMW have been doing this for years, on all their Efficient Dynamics cars.

Like i said, everybody does it to get as lower Co2 figure as possible, because come next year (i think?) the car makers are going to get taxed based on their average CO2 output.

Well if it was like the last one, full engine power wasn't available until the little button was pressed. Was that part of the test? I doubt it.

Everybody tricks the system, I don't imagine a car company actually cheats. Surely there would be massive fines and this stuff is looked into.

Yeah aware of that, but then why not offer the M5 with 150bhp till you push the M++ Sport Xtra button and you get 550bhp~ then surely it'll do 45MPG and give out no co2's?

Are you under the impression power output is the only thing that dictates mpg?

It isn't - look at how a 272bhp 330i gets the same fuel economy as a 218bhp 325i for example.

The emissions test is carried out using the modes that are selected when the car is started. Therefore full auto and low power mode will be the default behaviour.

Similiar problem on the CRZ but works against its paper stats. Normal mode rather than Eco for the NEDC mpg figures and Normal not sport for the declared 0-62 times.

LOL was thinking the same.

AFAIK the reason for limits is the engine if often far more capable than chassis / brakes / high speed stability etc etc....

I guess BMW don't feel confident the rest of the car is up to the engines potential.... which makes sense as it's not some exotica with unlimited cash thrown at brakes / suspension and all the other bits

Could be wrong...

edit: a hayabusa does 0-124 is round 7-8 secs so it's pretty rapid
