who buys £500 graphic cards?

i reckon there's plenty people here who happily spend a full weeks wage on a £250 graphics card , the people buying £500 ones are probably just on a higher wage

its not for me but i dont see how spending money you earnt on something you enjoy is 'sad'

why do people spend thousands on new cars when a couple of hundred pound one will still get them from A-B? why do people spend more on certain brand clothing when the cheaper unbranded will keep you just as warm? why do you go for big brand food instead of supermarkets own brand?
its just what people do. if you have the money and enjoy it then fair enough. i know people that go to the cinema once a week. at £10+ (by the time you add food, fuel etc) that £520 a year minimum, how is that different?

Even if I had the cash I don't think I'd spend £500. Purely because cards come and go so quickly, what's top of the range today, next year is ancient.

If I was on triple screens that would be a different matter though.

That's a decent price mate and it would max most games no problem at 1920x1080. Excluding the obvious games like Crysis and Metro perhaps. BUY IT :)

I read someone on here saying Crysis 2 wasn;t that hard on graphic cards. My 5770 runs it pretty well, but not on ethusiast setting.

To the op because we are enthusiasts and that's what we do if someone has the money to buy a 500 pounds card then good on them each to there own...

I've no problem with that, what I meant is what are they getting a guy with a 5770 isn't.

Or was does a £500 get you or allow you to do?

What card will allow you to max out games? a £200 card? if so why the need to double what you pay?
If I had thousands in the bank I would buy two of the top cards too.

Depends on resolution and how u want to play games i.e. in their full glory with all the trimmings turned up, heavy games like Metro 2033 on 2560x1600 or surround is gonna require sli of some kind to have all the trimmings on and get good fps.

The last gfx card released that was WORTH £500 at launch was the 8800GTX...I bought one of those as soon as they were available in the UK.

Since then I have been a bit more stringent on my GFX card spending habits

I have just spent 500 on 2 6970's im neither rich nor stupid nor a benchmark freak but i run 2560x1600 and one card will not run all games in that rez on high settings. 500 pounds isnt a huge amount of money really.

who buys £500 graphic cards?
Does two cards count ??

I long ago stopped spending £500+ on GPUs - especially when I can usually get within 10% of the top end GPU setup in benchmarks while spending half the money it doesn't make sense any more.

The only reason really for buying the more expensive setups is playing at very high res - my GTX470s in SLI struggle a bit with 3x 1680x1050 panels and wouldn't like 3x 1920x at all, tho they seem to do the job at 2560x mostly no problem.

I've got a 5770, what am I missing out on when I play Crysis 2?
I've got my eye on a 6870 black edition, will there b e a big difference between the cards?

I could never justify £500.00 on a single card, hence why i tend to buy a mid range model, then add a second cheaply. £500.00 would go a long way to upgrading my core components. Saying that though, my other hobby, (shooting), ive spent some crazy money on over the years. £2000.00 on a shotgun that i only kept for a few months.

You're right there and you just reminded me that I just paid £460 for 1 years road tax with only a road piece of paper to show for it, and a years worth of motoring of course! £500 for a gaming enthusiast isnt bad in comparison

Haha! Prius F TW :D:p

Well, some other hobbies cost more, but more 'Normal' Hobbies cost a lot less - I play tennis for £30 a month with the occasional £50 racket and could do it a lot cheaper by using public tennis courts making the only cost the aforementioned rackets

A friend of the family has £60 per week spent on them with tennis lessons per WEEK, so depends to what extent you take your hobby seriously.
