I have been a gamer for a long time and back in the 80s and early 90s I played a lot of complex board games from the likes of Avalon Hill.

Some favorites of mine were :

Civilisation (and Advanced Civilisation) - Very much like a board game version of the Sid Meieir Games....

Britannia - A strategic game where you had four players controlling various tribes for control of Britain. The game was split into various historical stages. The player with the Romans who were strong in the first stage would control weaker factions later in history.

183X - 1830 the most fondly remembered railway game. Lots of sequels came out later.

Anyone else play any of these or other board games? (I don't mean Risk or Trivial Pursuit)

I remember I had a geeky mate who used to have Democracy.

I think it was somewhat like Risk, in that you had a map of the world.

Catan is good fun, although there are times when it is impossible to win, so the game can be a grind when that happens. Also annoys me when retarded people keep dealing with the player in the lead, just making their posistion stronger.

I am hoping Puerto Rico will be more varied/tactical :D

You must pick some shonky starting positions if you get stalemate that often. My latest tactic is to avoid an 8 or 6 on ore because it will inevitably be blocked by a robber for half the damn game... so annoying! :p

Na I mean, one person is running away with the lead. :) Not a full game stalemate.

We have Talisman, Last Night on Earth, Touch of Evil, Munchkin, Doom, Descent, Pandemic, Betrayal at House on the Hill, DungeonQuest, City of Thieves, Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, Road Kill Rally, to name a few :)
