Is Nokia on the way out?

If analysts are correct, this quarter will be Nokia's first loss in 15 years. They're sitting a quite a big reserve of cash and they're now receiving money from both Apple and Microsoft. They could stop making phones tomorrow and still stay afloat for a number of years.

But they are under intense pressure if they want to retain their position as the mobile phone manufacturer. It's a good chance that they could become another Motorola or Sony Ericsson, with no real hope of ever deciding on their own future again.

Exactly...it's not that they're gonna go...just not be the same again, ever!

...
However, I really do expect someone to buy them, and sooner rather than later...and for a silly amount. Maybe Microsoft?

TBH one of the good things about Apple is they make both the hardware and software, so they are both designed and optimised for each other (more so than other platforms anyway). I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft want to do the same, and buying Nokia would IMO be a good way to achieve this.

/opens a can of worms

A bit off-topic but thought it was an interesting read: http://mobile-device.biz/content/item.php?item=30610

Could almost make this thread about RIM after the recent announcements although I expect them to pick up the ball soon. A good start would be to stop charging the cost of a first born for a BES server license considering how cheap in comparison it is to use mobile exchange with an iPhone or android.

again...rim have under delivered recently. The tablet market is killing manufacturers in many ways, and it looks like tablets may be finished already as dwindling ipad sales are showing. It appears that for once, the Apple hype machine hasn't worked as well as expected.

Thats due to 2 reasons :

1 ) Your comparing sales from a quarter which has the biggest holiday which just happens to provide a massive increase in sales. So obviously ipads will be selling less.

2 ) Its due to apple not being able to keep up with demand. There are only a certain amount of ipads the factories can churn out.

Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook said the company faces "the mother of all backlogs" with the iPad 2.

"I wish that we could have made a lot more iPad 2s, because there were a lot of people waiting for them," Cook said.

possibly...difficult to say really. I used crApple as an example...asus, acer, samsung and now rim have all had disappointing sales...motorola too!

different software/ different hardware. so a totally different phone?

Yes, but keep the good other hardware, although the N97 had many construction faults, it had loads of features and sensors, and an awesome keyboard that felt great to type on. And it was still quite resilient against damage if you ignore the side ''lock'' button and the camera lens issue, if I handled my current SGSII like my N97 I'd have a crack in my screen long ago and it'd have been damaged by water ages ago ( I used to answer my phone in the bathroom during a shower ( not under the shower of course, but with wet hands and head)...).

You need the a phone maker which makes a flagship model, stuffs it with more features than the current range, (eg. an FM transmitter or some other extra fancy sensors, more memory, an even fancier screen, something perhaps like hdmi out so you can plug the phone in the tv and watch a full HD film from the phone on your 50'' hdtv) and the resilience of Nokia phones in 1. I hate how the 3 dual core flagship phones out atm are fragile as **** (relatively, if you compare to Nokia) and lack features I actually miss or fancy new gizmo's...

Someone said the SGS2 has more memory anyhow than an iphone, I don't give a flying **** about iphone, I came from a 32gb phone, 16gb is a downgrade, it was full on the 3rd day, I can't even sync all my playlists I want as offline available in spotify atm... I find 16 gb a laughable low amount of memory on a flagship model, 2 years ago okay, now they should come 64gb standard.

I picked the fastest phone available from paper, but it IS a downgrade for me in certain area's, overall it's an awesome upgrade, but I miss features I had before, and I have far less memory to play with now than I used to.

^ lol, Snowdog needs more wifi's and the GeeBees!

Not sure if serious? If you are...

1. Buy a 32GB microSD card you cheapskate, or a just hook up a 500GB removable HD? (sounds like your getting memory confused with internal storage too?)
2. The SGS2 can output near blueray quality films to your 50" HD TV via HDMI/MHL. lol, how can you complain about that? Most PCs can't do that...
3. What are the other extra fancy sensors you want? It's already got a 3-axis gyroscope, magnetometer etc over the N97. What more do you want? X-Ray? particle accelerator? IR/FM transmitters are dead end tech.
4. Why did you but a 8.5mm phone if you want a 18mm qwerty tank? It'll be more resistant to drops/water than you think...
5. Even fancier screen? The technology/factories don't exist yet, sAMOLED+ is bleeding edge.

:D

Damn right I need more wifi's, for starters in the underground... Normal trains luckily already have em, as do many places I sit/go to like uni or hotspots near fastfood joints ( which do not need a password luckily, bah I went to Germany and the wifi there in the maccy d's asked for a u/n and pw, morons...), but, wifi in my car is a bit erm, tricky, I want a large music collection always with me though. And preferably a couple of hours of films and series to watch if I'm ever bored away from home or stuck waiting somewhere.

1. Atm I'm broke, but payday's tomorrow :p, but still, 16+32 gives 48 gb, still a tad little, and yes, I can carry around my external hard drive but that isn't practical.
2. I didn't know it could, nice :D. All I need to buy is a cable?
3. Indeed FM transmitter ( handy for work vans with no aux), and IR
4.
I picked the fastest phone available from paper,
5. (a tad) Larger screen ( say 4,5'' or so?), higher res.

I miss more competition, why do the sgs2,lgo2,htcs all have an 8mp camera, all have a 1.2 ghz dual core, why doesn't 1 try being significantly better than the other ? Basically I think the current tech allows higher spec phones, I don't care if they'd cost more, I'd simply like something even better.
I don't get it, why not go back to N97 if it was so amazing?

Why did the SGS Pro never come out?
Why does the Desire Z have an inferior spec compared to the original desire?

See what I mean, I miss a ''better than everything else'' phone.

you'd be lucky with all you want to get a phone for under £1k and/or £60 a month then...

Under 60 per months, easily with a 2 year contract, if I can get a 600 euro phone for 22.50 per month I can get a 1000+ phone for about 45 per month...

So what id a phone is 1k, I'm willing to pay extra for those features. The new nokia something has 64gb RAM, why does the Sammy have 4x as little, that's pathetic.

It's expandable though if you need it (I bet the vast majority of people don't), so you get 16+32GB, which is more than enough.

Nope, it's not if you like having a lot of music with you and one or 2 films to watch...

On my old 32gb Nokia I used nearly 28 GB of it, and thats with bugger all apps, no video's, JUST MUSIC.

If I want my whole pc music library on it ( in at least 192 kbit) I'd need about 100 gb.

Now with an android phone, loads of apps, some films and series, and of course more music, is what I want on my phone.

There is virtually no demand for having 100GB's worth of music on your phone.

You don't need it either, it might be handy, but you don't need it.

Luckily there's spotify otherwise I'd hate having so little music with me, only issue is I'll have a 1gb Datalimit soon, atm still on my old contract with unlimited but my provider doesn't do that any more, only T-mobile still have unlimited internet here but they have rubbish reception :(.

If internet was unlimited then there'd be less of a problem, I'd even stream xvid films over, I'll soon have 10 mb upload on my pc so dling at 3.6 or 7.2 mps (or through a wifi hotspot) would be quick enough, but of course telecom companies want to earn more money... :(

I have a mate who works for CPW and reckons you can't give Nokias away at the moment, and the company memos are keeping their distance from them to the point of probably NOT stocking any new models at all...worst case scenario that Nokia in the UK will be dead in 6 months...

I reckon in 2 years time the next generation of users would not of heard of Nokia unless they do a complete revamp
