Suspected burglar stabbed to death by homeowner

Won't be long before we'll have to open our front doors for them rather than face prosecution for them cutting themselves climbing through a window they've broken

I would have to agree here. The whole story isn't known at the moment. All that has been reported is that a homeowner killed the man when he was trying to enter the house.

Again, playing devils advocate. If you found someone in your back garden trying the back door, would you find it okay to run out the house and stab them to death?

No you wouldn't. A little intelligence in this situation would be obvious. Again, nothing is known so we're only speculating. However, if someone broke into my house, threatened the safety of my wife and children then I'd undoubtedly cause a severe amount of harm to essentially render them unable to proceed. Whether injuries are fatal or not is their luck for choosing the wrong home.

Well done householder. When is this obvious leaning of public opinion finally going to influence the law into protecting the victim of a burglary? Public opinion is surely the most influential factor in deciding the law so wtf is going on? Same thing with squatting laws, annoys the hell out of me.

Once you step outside the law by comitting an act of burglary or similar why the hell should you be protected by the law!

Still I understand the police intially treating it as a murder. The facts need to be fully established first but I truly hope they see sense and release the three people without charge.

Obviously more then the story is reporting.

A masked gang hits a house? Normally something specific they are after.
Guy stabs one to death? Had enough time to get to kitchen or had one to hand?
They arrest the girlfriend?

I'd wager this involves unsavoury characters on both sides.

Treating it as murder? Should be given a medal for ridding the world of another piece of scum.

Jesus, not again. The law defending the perpetrator, not the victim. Disgusting..

Victim being prosecuted for murder, absolutely fantastic

Oh give it a rest.

This has been discussed time and time again in GD. Although i won't be shedding a tear for the burglar, it is NOT unreasonable for the homeowner to be charged for murder - depending on the circumstances.

For him to be charged with murder, i suspect that the homeowner overstepped the mark of what is acceptable when protecting your home.

Ie. in the eyes of the law you are absolutely fine to subdue an offender in your home, with reasonable force, if you feel that your life is being threatened. However it is NOT acceptable to kill an offender that is no longer a threat - if they are fleeing for instance.

So, speculating again, if the story reveales that the man was just trying the back door then you agree that the house owner has correctly been arrested for murder.

That's that cleared up then :)

balaclava-clad gang

given the area it is in, I've worked there and its pretty scary, its easy to see how someone would be that scared they could stab someone.

poor homeowner tbh :(

While i agree with you, and playing devils advocate here, what happens if stabbing a burglar becomes ok by law. What to stop someone luring someone into their house, stabbing them and then claming they were trying to break in?

Evidence that they weren't breaking in? It's a pretty far fetched scenario really tbqfh.

Speculation. For all we know, he reached for the nearest sharp option, gave the masked bugger a stab in the dark and unknowingly hit a vital organ which has as a result killed him on his getaway.

Girlfriend presumably arrested because it's not clear as to who caused the fatality.

Tony Martin also on the face of it seemed to be a hero of the common man until you started to hear more and more about what actually happened, he quickly emerged as a lunatic out to kill. I'm joining the reserve-judgment camp until the much more detailed series of events leading up to the burglar being stabbed is released.
