Ive just ordered a 120gb ocz vertex 2e bigfoot. Would i be ok to clone my current os install or go with a fresh install of win7 64. My current windows install is only a few weeks old, (previous hdd died). Just a few games and a couple of films, pics and some music. New to ssd's so thanks for any advice.:)

Clean install is best. Ensure AHCI is enabled in the BIOS first and just hit next when you see the install/format screen. Run WEI once your up and running too..

Don't think windows will be optimised for the ssd if you clone. I always clean install anyway, gives you a chance to choose which files you don't use anymore ^^

i was in a similar situation with a mate's machine where i'd upgraded him to a ssd. he was on win7 so alignment presumably was already done, cloned it with acronis, installed the ssd and restored.

whilst i noticed it was quicker than his hdd, it generally felt a lot more sluggish compared to my machine which i had put a new install on.

in the end, i ended up reinstalling it for him anyway as i wasn't happy with how it was performing, heh.

Yep I can guarantee it will run slower when do using your method
You cloning an image from a non aligned normal HD just wont work

My method however does work :)

The reason you mates was running slow is acronis is NOT partition alignment aware (currently new version 11 has been released this week I think it fixes this)

i checked alignment (both in diskpart and ati 2011 home) and it was correctly set after a restore.

Well, i went for clean install, win7 64 installed in about 15 mins, i had all my drivers on a flash drive, chipset, xonar dx audio, nvidia gpu drivers, cant believe how quick the drive is. Download an app, agree with theyre ploicy etc, click next. Turn and look at the tv on the other side of my desk, look back at the monitor, click on finish. Boot time is fantastic, hit the switch, 30 seconds later your online browsing.

Good old Norton Ghost will clone/restore partitions without messing with the alignment..use partition to Image not "disk"
