First car - narrowed it down to 2

Hopefully the result on insurance quotes now means you are looking at different cars. Even a 2cv has to be better than a Corsa.

Not to rub anything in but I'm 21, and doing my quote with 0NCB is still under £1500 for my car (2007 3.4l Porsche Boxster S).

It's a funny business insurance.

Have a read about it on moneysavingexpert.com - there is a whole page and ways to tweak your quote, job title etc... to get the cost down.

Who on earth are you quoting with?

Elephant, but Bell and Admiral all also come within a few pounds of each other.

21, Group A postcode, 10k mileage, £1000 voluntary excess, 1 extra names driver (50 yo female, 0 crashes, held license for over 20 years), parking on drive.

I take it that the "50 yo female" is your mother as a named driver - does this really make so much difference? I can't believe that the insurance companies can't see through this sort of thing. Do you both live at the same address and is it a 'legit' address?

It always concerns me that if you exploit these loop-holes you might find the insurance company exploiting them in their turn if you happen to make a clam.

It is my mother and it makes a massive difference. We both live at the same address and it is all totally legit. When my Dad was alive he hardly altered my quote by my Mum brings it down a lot. It's totally legit as one day she may need to drive the car.

I saved about £150 off my last quote by changing my job title to one of the following: Computer Operator, Computer Manager, Computer User etc....

It's all legit as they all apply but the difference in money is massive.

How exactly could an insurance company exploit a perfectly legitimate named driver against you?

The worst they can do is one day decide to make it so that named drivers won't reduce premiums, in which case people won't be able to use it to lower prices any more but that's about it.

Im sorry but you'd be a fool to pay that much for insurance its insane. I certainly wouldn't get a corsa either

It's not a loophole at all. You are telling the insurer that a lower risk driver will also drive the car from time to time.

Something odd after putting my father as the proposer and me as an additional driver, despite him having driven his whole live with no accidents or convictions etc. putting him as the proposer increases the insurance by £1000?!? How does that work?

Another male is added to the policy so the risk increases by 100% lol.

No idea man:p

Perhaps because insurance companies are realizing how frequently fronting occurs.

Its not 150% above board either though?

Example.

Both my mum and my nan are named on my insurance. My nan is a vicar 200+ miles away and I can't quite picture her behind the wheel of the Soarer and my mum is a few thousand miles away in another country, but I can put them on as named driver and save the few GRAND different not having them on would make despite realistically them both rather calling a cab well before asking me for car keys.

'Loophole' works nicely .

I didn't actually use the phrase "a perfectly legitimate named driver", I was talking about a legitimate address - i.e. the one at which you normally live, rather than some low-risk address in the middle of nowhere (e.g. your parent's) from which you can receive mail.

And I am sure that insurers will not have seen through this ploy and would never look into how often this "lower risk driver" actually drove the car in the event that you made a significant claim ;)

It is quite clear from some of the posts in this thread that people do add "lower risk drivers", specifically for the purpose of lowering premiums - needless to say, this should not be taken to be a reference to anyone in any way related to a vicar ;)

I am just curious as to how insurers feel about this loop-hole.

For you, perhaps not?

If neither of them ever drive the car you are, IMHO, wrong to add to them.
