First car - narrowed it down to 2

2L car @ 17 with no driving experience. Doesn't take a genius to work out the outcome here.

Yes he should have got a 1.6 or 1.8, 2 whole litres especially in a supercar like a Volvo is utter madness!!! I hear it has as much as 136bhp and does 0-60 in about 10 seconds, this is surely going to end in tears.

my god that 2L car is just too much powaaahhhhh to handle at such a tender age of 17. At 17 you should own of these so you wont plough into a wall

Well for a start he's not 17 and he's got riding experience so he's used to travelling on the road at speed. Secondly a 140bhp Volvo isn't exactly some crazy powerhouse that's going to throw him sideways into the nearest hedge if he so much as dares look at the accelerator pedal anyway.

It seems it takes more genius than you are capable of to see the outcome.

I don't live in a city, I live in a small town. I live on a nice estate (full of old people and no bad areas). The town has very few bad estates, all of which are on the other side of town. it's not a crime hotspot - even they aren't that bad. I don't live on a main road. The car would be kept in a locked garage despite all of this (as i entered on the form) and I'm in my 20s. There's really no reason why they quote my insurance as being so high other than they want moneys, but just do a quick google search and you'll find reels of news articles about the situation. I recall one where a young lad was quoted something like 500 quid more than his twin sister on the same car, obviously the same age, lived in the same house etc. only difference being he was male.

same occupation, no part time jobs, passed on the same date ? with every insurance situtaion there will always be differences. i would say the price you quoted could be better if you look at different cars, i live in a really bad rated postcode (dont worry about the crime rate you read up on as its down to the insurance underwritters what they class a good postcode) and my first insurance on DD was less than £2000. try the admiral group website, add on mum/sister and look at a selection of cars, comparison sites assume some of the information so they good for getting your base price but your better off going thru the main website for the company

I can't be bothered to read back through the thread and check but I believe that Deific is older than 17 . . . 22 perhaps

I would also say that anyone who has ridden a motorbike on the public roads for a while and is still alive, as he appears to be, is likely to be far better than pretty much ANY car driver of similar experience in terms of observation and awareness of the road surface.

As to a 2L Volvo, it sounds like a perfectly safe choice - Go Deific! :)

Quick question on adding named drivers. My mum only has an automatic licence. I drive a manual car, would I still be able to add her as a named driver? Im named on her insurance.

Given that it is illegal for your Mum to drive your car, there is no reasonable reason in the eyes of an insurer to insure her on your car.

That's what I thought and why I've never tried it, but always worth an ask :)

When we were students, my mate's mum was on his and about ten of his mate's policies... she had 20 years clean license and no accidents. Brought all their premiums down.

Poor dear had no idea at all. On reflection, I don't know why they didn't use their own parents though?

Always made me smile. You can imagine the insurance companies wondering why this women was insured on half the hot hatches in the area. :) (PistonHeads LINK)
Students hey? Ya gotta luv em :D

She doesn't qualify to drive a manual car, so its against the law if she drives it. Don't think you can add her on your insurance :(

Hi, crikey, am I correct that the BMW will lose over three years £15k? Sorry but I'd much rather spend £18k on a car that's worth £9.5k in three and a half years time. By that calculation the BMW is costing an additional £416 depreciation a month on top of the monthly payments. Is this correct or is my maths, never my strong point, letting me down again.

Yeh I'm not 17 lol and the Volvo is far from a supercar :D Gets good write ups as a commuting car with an upmarket feel, cheaper to insure than other cars in its class because of Volvos reputation as safety kings (it has a 5 star NCAP rating), it's supposedly a pleasure to drive - with the reviews all pointing at the 2L version as it has the best balance in terms of fuel economy and enough grunt not to feel underpowered like the 1.6 or 1.8 versions, and I generally like the look of the car too. Going to look at some this coming week.

One thing I've found, quoting with LV though, is that adding named drivers has no affect on the quote :/
