UK to donate £38 million to Ethiopa.

Ethiopia has access to plenty of water, they just have not harnessed it yet..... thats right, we are in 2011 and they still have not bothered to make the most of their own natural resources.

Problem is they lay around waiting for the next Lenny Henry brigade to come along, or when the suns a bit hot, say that all their crops are dead and that all their water is dirty because they decided to have a dump in it.... so lets get all the starving kids together and ask for more money from other countries as its easier that way.

If all Ethiopians had some work ethic, rather than nailing each other because 'we need more kids because so many die.....' then they might be able to sustain themselves a bit more.

What did English or whatever people inhabited the British Isles do way back when? Sit around thinking, its alright we can be poor, do nothing, not have the motivation to explore or develop systems to feed ourselves, as in a couple of hundred years.. Lenny Henry will come along with a red flipping nose to save us.

2011 and these people still lay about moaning, its not good enough.

There is no utopian paradise. The closest are the Scandinavian/Nordic nations and you'd poop your pants and start crying if you saw the amount of tax they pay.

Yet none of them seem to want to change for what "the west" has despite us all crying and whining about what we pay already. And when I say "we" I am referring to the general population as a whole.

Have yo actually BEEN to Ethiopia? Or even Africa?

This. Almost every country in the world has become industrialised and thrive on export and trade, according to their own resources and expertise. Africa, so they say, is where it all began. Surely then they have had more time to do it than most!

We see schools being built in Ethiopa - yet we see the educated ones leaving their own country to prosper for themselves in the West as Doctors. How many really do stay in their home country and contribute. There are many, I'm sure, but surely not as many who get up and leave.

I'm all for donations, but like many have said, I would prefer to see it as a donation to allow them to build infrastructure, not spoon feed them.

Why would I go to Ethiopia, do they even have good beaches?

Ive been to Mauritius though, lovely beaches, lovely people who are willing to do anything for you... and iirc its part of the continent of Africa. Just goes to show, put in the effort, get the rewards. Mauritius uses its resources to its best ability ie tourism, sugar cane (or it was).

You complain about Ethiopians being lazy but I'm guessing that you've never been to Ethiopia. Where does your knowledge of their situation come from?

So everyone in this thread who has an opinion on Ethiopia either for or against this donation, has been there and thus has more knowledge than me?

All you are doing is picking on one person, trying to make out because my view is different, that im wrong for not actually going there. What about questioning those that believe all these stories and want to give them money, why are you not asking them if they have been there... its all relevant, you just want to score kudos.

Im saying they are lazy because they poo in their own drinking water... they dont make the most of their natural resources and year on year, need money, food and handouts just to survive. Its a joke and its not my taxes that should be the flipping punchline.

Ethiopia is land locked so no beaches. Rainfall is unpredictable, however in the last decade access to water has increased. To suggest that Ethiopian's are doing nothing is a tad unfair.

I was being ironic about Ethiopia and beaches, but OK maybe im pushing the limits with some of my comments, but whatever they are doing... its not enough, its been too long now for them to still be at this stage where by we have to feed them.

African nations wanted to rule themselves..............

Why aren't they ready for the modern world?

Thats a stupid question.

There were living in mud huts and killing each other with pointy sticks up until the begining of the 20th century, the white man comes along, and those he doesnt kill or ship off to go and be slaves in the Americas and Europe he tries impose some kind of half arsed system of European administration on them.
As a continent they were probably around about 10 to 12 generations off being even remotely ready for the kind of world that was imposed on them.

They missed several lifetimes worth of development between where they were and where western Civalistation was before it was foisted upon them, only to **** off and leave them to it less than a hundred years later and not really developing the country.

Nice work.
It takes generations to deveolp a society, not 70 odd years.

Of course its not just Africa, we slaughtered the Native Americans and the Aborigines as well and tried to impose our way of life on them as well, and that all turned out just rosy didnt it?

I think we should help but I also think you get to a stage where you have to consider other options, if the country just cannot grow crops then you have to move out and leave it, you have vast areas of the world that you cannot live in such as very hot deserts and then the other extreme cold.

We have to accept that we cant live on every inch of the planet.

Do they have any oil? I know Somalia is thought to have some, and they're just next door.

I'm not sure about Ethiopia, but isn't Southern Sudan supposed to have some, which is also just next door. I think the main thing about Ethiopia is that they're considered by the West to be a stabilising force in the region i.e. will launch attacks on Al Quedas in Somalia if we ask them to. I think Ethiopia is actually an economic success story for Africa, just that unfortunately there are large rural areas that are prone to drought and the government can't cope.

Wow.

Don't bother to travel out in the world and see how people actually live their lives, it might come as a shock to you.

Some facts for you from a simple search about Ethiopia:

"The agricultural sector suffers from frequent drought and poor cultivation practices"

"Population below poverty line: 38.7% (FY05/06 est.)"

The latter compared to the UK's own index from the same source:
"Population below poverty line: 14% (2006 est.)"
