HSBC sercure key fob

I only read the first 10 or so replies but I feel your pain OP. I don't really want to use it either.

We have until Christmas though just ignore it for the time being and then you'll have to use it unfortunately. It gives you the option to just go "straight to accounts" if you haven't registered it so that's what i'm doing

I already registered it as I couldn't find the "straight to accounts" bit. Fail:p

Give me this over no protection any day cause most banks online assurances worth jack crap when you put them to the test with a claim.
I moved 3 accounts to the RBS so I could have the reader that is the only device that can allow money out of your accounts on line.

I've got to be honest, it is a bit of a ball ache, but then I'm just not used to using it. Problem I have is I sometimes work on secure sites which don't even allow USB sticks on site, this is virtually impossible to blag onsite, despite it being, secure.

Actually, that option disappears. The December thing is the total customer target transition date. HSBC are sending these out in rollout to customers. They wait 5 days to assume you have it, then the option to go straight to accounts is no longer available.

I agree, I despise this new calculator thing. I've already left it at my girlfriends numerous times just by being useless and forgetful. An idea I had is generate 10 numbers, save them somewhere online and then use and delete until I need to generate some more. I haven't tested this method yet so I don't know if it works, I'm not sure if the numbers generated are linked to time somehow.

The numbers are syncronised with HSBC's systems - that wouldn't work.

Can't believe the level of whinging about this - its for your security, and just lessens the chance of your online account being phished/hacked. I agree that it is not the most portable of beasts (mine normally sits at home), but it is wallet friendly afaik.

Its an ass having to use it just to login, if it was used to setup new payee's or transfer money i'd understand.

The funny thing is you dont need it for telephone banking

I agree that it is a faf, I would prefer not to carry it around, however I would also prefer not to loose money from my bank without my concent. Swings and roundabouts, but in the long run its worth it :)

the HSBC one is tiny! Quit *****ing.

I'm with the OP, although I haven't had mine yet, I would consider changing banks because of it, not because of size etc but just out of principle.

All this because a lot of people have stupidly easy passwords or aren't aware of basic internet security and happily give their info out in reply to fake HSBC mailshots etc.

It is likely the people stupid enough to have a simple password or willing to give their password out to anyone would be stumped by using one of these devices.

There was nothing wrong with the old method. 3 random characters from a 6-8 digit passcode is not easy to crack.

it is if you're a numpty and you will enter the details in response to any old email requesting that you "confirm" your account details

Thats why it should be opt-out - so people who aren't stupid can make the decision not to use it.

I also agree it makes sense for certain actions, like transfering money but you should be able to check your balance without it. Iphone HSBC App please

I've just changed my bank from Santander to Natwest and just orderd my secure Calc thingy.... Not seen how big it is but looking at that pic it's huge...LOL

Just to note with Natwest you only need the secure Calcs if your adding & removing direct debts, standing orders and if it's a new contact that's not already in your list, you can simply log in to the online banking using your passwords and a couple of other security questions check ya balance and things without the calc.

Like I said still waiting for mine to turn up so it's smaller then I will post a Pic.
