After buying my MB/CPU/Memm, i have some money left for a ssd (About £130).

I was wondering if 60/64gb would be enough to run Win7 on, if not i have been looking at the intel 80gb one.
Which leaves me to the question: which one would be the best buy? The Crucial, or the on pre-order OCZ vertex3 ?

And the last question, would anyone have a link for the best way of installing the OS on the ssd and the after 'tweaks'?
I had a link that i thought i bookmarked, but seemed to have lost it :(

Thanks

I went for the Crucial M4 60GB and have got 30+GB free so it should be enough space to have windows and a few of my frequently used progs.

As for setting up, you should setup using AHCI as opposed to IDE; this can be configured in the BIOS before installing windows i believe.

I installed windows before doing this and was able to change to AHCI afterwards following the steps here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976
It now runs/boots a lot faster:D

Thats good to hear, I suppose disable defrag and run index? Would I need to install any other drivers btw?
I assume the windows updates can be run as normal?

So many questions... Just want to get it right first time round :)

I have a clean install of Win 7 and have put my normal apps and 2 games on it and its ended up 75gb so depends what apps you use really. What's your current system partition size?

That one was 70gb, 5gb free space. But can easily be cleared of about 15-20gb, for somereason it made a backup for itunes there.. i think the missus used her ipod on my pc once.

I suppose saving files, pictures on the normal hdd to keep space free :)
The page file, should i point it to another hdd?

Will i need to get a sata-III cable for the drive? Or does any cable work with it?
Will be pairing the drive with P67A-GD53

If you have enough RAM that the pagefile barely gets used i would put it on a seprate drive, also disabling hibernation and deleting the hibernation file can save a few more gigs.

Any SATA cable will work. You'll need a adaptor to fit the drive in a desktop case unless your case has a specific place for SSD's.

Raven 3 is on order, should be able to hold one :)
I always disable hibernation/sleep. Always switch my pc off.

Any good quality SATA II or III cable will work. SATA III does not require a 'special' cable, the manufacturers just sell the same cables and put an extra 'I' on the end and charge you a couple of quid extra ;)

Im a first time SSD buyer too and I don't want to start a new thread so i'll just hop in on this one if thats okay with everyone.

I want to get a 120gb Vertex 3, but I hear there are have been a lot of failure problems with them (see ocz forums)

has anyone had any experience with this? is it worth waiting till all the bugs are sorted out and they drop in price a bit too, I expect by 2 years time We'll be seeing SSDs everywhere, they'll be good sizes (500gb+) and they'll be reasonably cheap..

Haha, that wouldn't suprise :p I'll use the sata lead that comes with the board :)

I went for the crucial m4 64gb in the end. Everything should be in tomorrow :)
