It will be interesting to see how Battlefield Play4Free goes on.

The whole microtransaction thing worked so well for valve with TF2 they made it free to play. I wonder which of the franchises has more success with it ? Battfield or COD ?

I couldn't give two hoots about mod tools. Only on very very rare occasions do they produce anything worth playing. And when that happens the developer employs the mod team to make a full blown proper game anyway or they become a developer in their own right.

I would much rather time was spent getting the game polished and as bug free as possible for launch than it ship with mod tools.

There are enough game engines available for free for any mod team to produce stuff on, without the need for DICE to add another.

you seem to miss the point competitive side is dead without mods straight away as you need mods to do 99 percent of comp side of things.

most fps games have features that have come from mods whether they have been credited for them or not.

cod 4 killstreak stuff and lots of other cod stuff for example even hc mode was from mods made by community members then adapted to the next or another game later on they are very important.

its not the be all and end all but saying they dont matter is not true.

How does not having mod tools stop people playing a game competitively? How ever the game plays its the same for both sides and therefore fair. It's not like BF3 will ever make it as a pro game, when they're still playing CS 1.6.

It was only a guess :p

I did a quick Google and it seems you're right - it's NFS and MOH which will be using Frostbite 2, both EA titles.

This is the thing, its not just whole new games like Counter Strike was to halflife 2.

The mod tools that were made available to halflife 2 enabled a whole bunch of server side mods to be developed which enabled admins to easily control the server in and out of match mode (applying a password, changing values to match league rules etc..) that just can't be done easily out of the box.

For me I dont think that mod tools are a must from day one but I would certainly hope that once they have milked us for all the DLC that they will release some mod tools to refresh the game and advance the genre. Mod tools are so important for progression, without them a lot of very very good games would never have been made and the world would be a sadder place. Although if the next MOH is on Frostbite 2 then it may be quite some time before we see mod tools if ever.

What is with the yearly cycles? Does nobody learn from history anymore? EA did it to MoH and killed the franchise off, the guys who were working on it made CoD and now Activision is doing it to that and killing it off (and the guys who left MoH for CoD have now left CoD so will be interesting to see what happens there). Now EA are doing what they did to MoH to MoH again AND to Battlefield. I mean seriously, what the hell is wrong with these people?

What was the point in BFP4F? It seems like a worse gfx version of BF2, just dont see why it is needed when BF2 + all expansions can be picked up for sub £10.

+1. COD4 was the last COD i played as the next realease was just poop, only released to make a shed load more money 12 months later, and now Activision did the same. People will get bored and the franchise will die. Really hope BF3 can have some longevity and keep the series alive. Problem with BC2 is pretty much all the people I've played with view it as a stopgap until BF3 rather than something they will continue.

DLC maps, hardcore mode, loads of different game types will split the player base as much as any mod content.

Regarding BFP4F, it's an awful game.

Its an experimentation in microtransaction gameplay

re-using an old game was the cheapest way to achieve this.

Hardly an experiment when BF Heroes, Tiger Woods Online and NFS World have been out a lot longer and must be turning a profit to still be supported by EA.

Though I agree re using and old game would save on costs.

Big EA announcements incoming
July 4th, 2011 Valay
EA’s Summer Showcase has become a fairly traditional event. If my memory serves me correctly, the publisher has been hosting these annual events as far back as 2006. EA’s latest showcase will be taking place this Thursday. And it sounds like it’s going to be pretty significant.

Wendy Spander, EA’s Senior Events and Media Manager, says that big announcements are on the way. Spander tweeted a few days ago:

“Looking forward to the 3 day weekend – then back to work preparing for the big EA Summer Showcase on Thursday. Big announcements ahead!”

A few games have been confirmed for the showcase so far. Battlefield 3, Madden NFL 12, and The Sims 3 Pets will be playable.

We’ll bring you all of the news on Thursday.

thats horse ****

one of the best mods ever to come out for Battlefield 1942 was Desert Combat

The people making it were of such talent and competence in making games, they went pro.

Thats the sort of people that are out there making mods. People good enough to be pro developers. To say they don't have the skills is BS.

Agreed, I also helped get one of the first custom maps * Actually If I remember right it was the first custom map inside bf1942* The battle of Bilston

We did it with help from Rexman the lad who went onto create the tools every mod used there on after. Including DC

NFS World

Is that any good then

20 dollars to 'upgrade' to a TT Nice if they can get people to do that, imagine what a veyron costs
