Akira is one of my favourite films of all time, It's amazing, I'd happily write a novel about how good I think it is, brilliant, has had such a massive influence in cinema (a lot of western cinema released now can still see bits of Akira in it) and how Japanese anime is received elsewhere. I did mention in terms of Western Cinema, but I'm not a big Anime fan and as a result wasn't aware of many other films at the time that are a) as good b) had the same effect.

I'd be interested to which films of the same time are better then it ? Are you talking about films since it?

I adore Ghost in the Shell but that was later wasn't it?

Yeah, I completely agree with the first point you made about the West.

Probably not the same effect, but story wise some animes are amazing!

Tbh, the Studio Ghibli stuff is always a good start for anime

oh I don't disagree about some of the Japanese Anime story lines being fat more creative and imaginative and amazing then their counter part's in the West.

The Studio Ghibli is indeed quite good, I've got several of their films and do enjoy them.

Akira remains my favourite Anime though and one of my favourite films period
