Ok who sneeks in snacks to the pictures

I usually will pay for a mixed large ice blast and large popcorn(I challenge myself to try and finish it). Don't go to cinema that often so don't mind occassionaly paying up.

We always bring a backpack or rucksack with food and drink in

One time we walked in with a clear tesco bag with popcorn and drink in it, we were told we weren't allowed to bring it in and had to leave it at the podium thing....

Prices are stupid anyway. Even the vending machines charge £1.60 for a bottle of coke at the cinemas, it's not about being cheap, it's about not being ripped off.

I occasionally buy a drink but very rarely anything else, can't stand popcorn, can't eat sweets (Type II diabetic), hot dogs and nachos pointless as they are finished long before the film starts otherwise they wouldn't still be hot.

If I take anything it will be a bag of mixed nuts or something similar...

Cinema in Malaysia is quite cheap :D

Around 2,50 for a ticket and food isn't too much - maybe 2 quid for drink and hot dog? Total less than a fiver :) So no need to sneak anything in really

always thought you had to sneak drinks & food in until my last cinema visit. Drink didn't fit it my small coat hut lmfao so just carried it and they didn't say anything.

I still think they would make more money by being cheaper, it's the whole high price but low turn out, compared to low price high turn out.

What percentage of people buy food and how many would if it was a reasonable price.

I am pretty sure they have carefully modelled and tested the correct price points and 'offers' to balance number of people they need to get to the food counters (before the film starts) vs their margins.

I always do this, living in London its even more expensive!

£15 for a cinema ticket, £10 for a Drink and popcorn.

so Orange Wednesdays plus Tescos sweets/drink = Half the price.

They don't even break even on ticket prices on big films - they break even (and then some) on added sales like food.

Having read your links, it seems that way...

Well, I never buy snacks at the cinema, so you can blame me when the whole thing sinks. It's the fault of the studios really, not the cinemas.

In my case it wouldn't make sense NOT to buy food on the way. Whilst walking two the cinema there are plenty of shops etc which sell food (inc. Maccies, Subway, Greggs etc) then right around the corner from the cinemas is a tesco

None of the cinemas I have ever been to have a sign saying you can only eat or drink food purchased on the premises, I bring my own drink as they dont sell the drink I like, and will then get a popcorn or whatever as it tastes nicer than the stuff you can buy in supermarkets.

Worst of all this all happened in Essex, you have been owned and possibly raped (your words not mine:p) by life. An expensive pop is least of your worries.

They're technically not allowed to bring in snacks. If I recall, the ticket price doesn't even cover the cost of running the cinema and showing the films - only do they break even and then start making profit on drinks and crisps.

In there eyes it is better to keep the ticket price down (to bring people in) and try to up-sell them on snacks.

You don't have to buy them..
My business is a specialist firm of entertainment economists and you are right broadly speaking. Cinemas have for the past 20 years or so been pretty horrible businesses in terms of return on showing the film and as such the need to extract profit from the secondary items has driven up the prices for food and drink.

You're not allowed - but I almost always do - I'm so freakin' rebellious sometimes it hurts  :p

It's already a complete rip to go see a film at the cinema - I'm not giving them anymore money than I have to :p
