I love you mate

Czech mates.

Ummm the Blonde looks like a possible mate but the other is way too skinny, i'd be scared of cutting myself on her bones when they broke as we were "mating"

Needs padding out a little like this ---

 :D

Now that is a Mate ..

No offence mate, but you sound like a threepenny bit mate

And that's exactly the context in which I more often hear the word 'mate' being used. Not so often in a direct insult towards me though. Sorry if I sound unfriendly, it's not my intention, just my perception of its use. I think when I said it 'annoys' me that was the wrong word to use though.

A few years ago in Southampton our house ended up bringing a few people home from a particularly chavy club we went to for a laugh (locals will probably recognise it - Ikon/Diva). I retired to my room with one of the young females, closeted away for about half an hour before I returned to the party. She kept saying "Oh mate, mate, oh mate, oh mate, mate". I had to get up and leave.

Just having a laugh with you fella, bit of banter is all.

You must have converted me I used Fella then rather than mate :)

I always call people by their first name rather than by mate or buddy or whatever. Some people get quite intimidated by it.

Like when they say Alright mate
And I say alright [name]
but that's just me.

I use pal quite a lot, but I also call people sir. Women, after I've started on the drink, quickly become darling.
Mate, not so much.

Animals choose a mate. It's the one they're going to mate with. Make sense mate?

Ok, if we're being picky the etymology of the different definitions mentioned here of the word are unrelated. Happier? :p

I suppose it depends on the context but as a general rule I don't tend to think of saying mate as meaning that you want to procreate with them. Most of the time I'll just use the persons name but sometimes I'll use mate instead.

Must admit "Pal" isn't something I've ever used myself.

Also, to my mind "Sir" belongs entirely to the armed forces and "darling" is what I'd consider a derogatory term. However, that's another story. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . lets not go there :p

I've called people "Mate" quite a few times. This doesn't necessarily mean i wish to "mate" with said individual. I've also found myself using the term "dude" quite often (both on line and irl) granted this maybe referred to as an "Amercanizm" (particularly in reference to stoners, surfers and skaters) but it seems to fit quite well into my own personal and working environment ;)

how about a NSFW in the thread title? someone's going to open this thread at work monday morning and BOOM

Care to elaborate?

This particular thread isn't safe for work because?

I see no pictures of scantily clad females here and no reason why I shouldn't open this thread and have a look see on Mon morn in the office as to why a few select individuals arguing over the use of the word "mate" in the English language and whether this particular subject has any sexual innuendos that "could" be construed as derogatory.
