She's pretty nervous though. Does anyone know any friendly instructors in the Reading/Wokingham area? I don't really want her to learn with the AA or one of those huge schools if possible.

Why not? I did and the guy I got through the AA was fantastic.

I started with a non branded school, but she was awful, eventually had to leave anyway.
Swapped to RAC because my GF knew a driving instructer from years ago who they used to live next door too. Was a top bloke and really knew his stuff, helped me more in a couple of days than she ever did.

Off topic but slightly relevent and hardly worth a new thread:

Does the passanger sitting in with someone driving around on a provisional licence need to be insured to drive the car?

Yes. Must have insurance to drive that particular car.

Do they have to be able to drive it (drink, asleep, injury etc....)?
Yes, of course!
If they didn't then why would they need to be in the car in the first place

The whole point of having a qualified driver with the learner is so that they can take control if necessary and/or advise the learner.

I didn't realise the 'tutor' needed to be insured on the vehicle. I was aware you needed a full valid drivers license, 3 years experience and to be over 21. Obviously that the learner needs to be insured but not the tutor.

not sure if serious???

from direct.gov.uk here

If you want to practise your driving with an accompanying driver, the accompanying driver must be over the age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full licence, in the relevant vehicle category, for three years.
and thats all it says on that

I was always under the impression that it didn't matter if the person sitting in with the learner was insured.

^ah!

Also, it doesn't matter who the school is its the instructor that makes the difference! You may find a gem in one of the big driving schools

I was sure you needed to be insured too :/

My missus passed this year with a school called Bill Plant, I don't know if it's national or not. They were good though.

I went with the AA in Reading when I learned - they were good for the first lessons, but then the instructor changed and wasn't as good. I completed the test with the AA as my instructors.

Yeah, Bill Plant is national. For about 5 years I thought it was just one self employed guy who managed to get around a hell of a long way :/.

I'm positive that you don't need to be insured on the car if you're accompanying a learner.
