Battlefield 3 no XP support

"No support" doesn't mean it won't run (unless I'm mistaken).

Not a major issue really, dev's need to move on from DX9 and supporting XP, the PC platform needs to move forward.

Is that how it works? I've played DX9 games on a DX8 card, doesn't it just use a lower version? And aren't there often options to use OpenGL?

It is indeed so - DirectX 10.1 (notably, not DirectX 10 :p) supports a Direct3D 9 feature level that may allow DirectX 9 hardware to run the game, but that's still running on top of a superset of DirectX 10 which is unsupported by Windows XP (thanks to driver models and all that jazz). Also, OpenGL is so different that coding for it when you already have a Direct3D codebase represents a fairly hefty development effort. They could do it (and don't get me wrong, I'd like if they did it), but it's very unlikely.

well then if this is true they should have supported dx10/11 into XP then instead of trying to 'bully' users into upgrading, its typical bill gates moaning he dosn't have enough money as usual

and remember that 'windows' is only a software interface so using XP does not mean you have a '10 year old system' its all about the hardware (and if your graphics card supports DX10)

What does this have to do with Bill Gates?
In what way is he directly involved?

Enlighten me, why are you defending Windows XP?
Why are you not still using Windows 98SE, it was a fine enough operating system, did everything we needed!
How dare Bill Gates try and grab our much needed moneys, typical Micro$haft, always stealing our golds and giving us nothing.
Actually, Windows 3.1 worked pretty good, they could and should have ported DX10/11 down to that.

Criminals if you ask me. Forcing us to move into the future, off of an OS that's not stuck in the stone age? How dare they!
HOW DARE THEY!!!!!

I should clarify my 'dross', the PS3 doesn't use DirectX, they have their own API, but it does use a similar chipset to the 7800GTX which is a DirectX9 card. They say XP won't be supported, but I can count the number of DX10 only titles on one hand, and I bet that within a few weeks someone will mod it to run on XP systems like the DX10 "effects" in crysis that could be turned on in XP with a bit of tinkering.

I admit I overlooked something before writing my previous post, its the Frostbite 2 engine which was freshly written for DX11, I thought it was the same as BF:BC2 with some bling.

I'm stubborn though! I bet someone will get it to work on XP.

(also this is irrelevant to me, I use W7, I just can't sleep and talk nonsense on the internet instead)

Just to point out that the xp users as a % have a vastly lower count on the x64 front than the vista or win7 percentages and those who upgrade will almost certainly get the x64 version.

I think that is the bigger "push" for EA than the DX number, they're using this like valve did hl2 to launch steam to encourage a lot of users to move on so they widen the market for their future games which they are probbaly wanting to move into higher ram usage for. Maybe not next year or the year after but the years after that.

It's fairly rare to get a huge profile game like this out which already has a large established fan base and an even larger one to come from word of mouth so they are undoubtedly fitting it into a much longer term plan than "lol dx11".

I hope your running a dx9 card then, only an imbecil would be using a dx11 card on a 32 bit old crap os lol. Also your ye olde dx9 card wont run bf3 well even if it was supported, time for an upgrade me thinks, start with th os.

"lol no dx11" sums it up nicely

:p sorry couldn't resist.

TBH, I think while a few people cling to XP, most of us are on Vista or higher now.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure I remember them saying no XP support when the title was first released... indeed I'm sure there was a thread about it on this very forum.

I don't play BF3 though, so could be wrong :p

I find the people who cling onto xp funny. They are people who don't like change and have the obserd mentality of "If it's not broke don't fix it" and my best friend's family are just like that and that's why they still have a CRT tv when they easily have the money to buy a new one and the reason they have only ever owned vauxhalls. Dare I say that these people need to open their eyes.

W7 is an improvement over xp and people sticking to xp are only holding devs back and I think it's a brilliant step to stop supporting it as I don't know any gamer who is on xp any more because it likely means their pc is too old to run the games anyway.

Have a glance at the consoles, then back to PC hardware.
The Xbox360 has a DX10 GPU and the PS3 has a DX9 GPU

Now to PC hardware,
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

70% of gamers have at least a DX10 capable graphics card, which means that 30% won't be able to run BF3 due to being limited to DX9 (and granted, those DX9 cards wouldn't be much fun to play on)

But let me put it another way, that graphics card you bought in 2006, such as a GTX 7800, is no longer supported, whereas, on the PS3 - which has a very similar chipset directly based on a 7800 - will be supported.

For arguments sake, you might as well be complaining to PS3 owners for holding onto such ancient hardware. Why should support for a PC system on a similar spec to the PS3 be suddenly dropped, alienating 30% of potential gamers? Surely if it can run on a PS3 it can run with the bells and whistles turned down on a 5 year old rig with a high end GPU from that era.

The money comes from consoles, which means that they have to cater for the ageing hardware there, and the DX9 chipset on the PS3.

If the PS3 is running DX9 hardware, then I'm going to assume DX9 will be supported in the PC.

You don't understand how consoles work. The reason they run so well on out dated gpu's is because devs only need to make a game work on one set of hardware. The reason pc's don't work like this is because dev's have to optimize the game for all possible hardware set ups. So your argument is void.

Cutting out DX9 makes it a lot easier for devs and allows them to concentrate on what dx10/11 can bring to a game. Further more, anyone using a dx9 card cannot run the game anyway. A 1900XT could no way handle BF3.

i understand and i have already said i will be using windows 7 for bf3

some people .

i understand the differences i have w7 for like 100000 time i just prefer xp. reel your neck in for a minute you might see that :)

Explain, in detail, what you prefer about xp then because there is only one thing I rathered in xp and I'm willing to bet you don't even say it.

That guy hit a nerve that badly eh? His comment got a smile out of me, don't have to take it so seriously.
