Do you Max Your Games Out

Yep, but if i can't get good FPS, i'll find the setting that's causing the problem and turn it down to the next level.

Worst "I have a better PC than you" thread ever!

Oh wait this isn't GD :p

I turn all on Max then lower until it is playable as I expect the standard response would be.

When I can I do, however I always turn off bloom, over the top HDR, vignette, motion blur, some depth of field if it's obtrusive and other post processing effects.

I like my games crisp and clean, most of the above just doesn't work for me.

Max everything out so far easy at 1080p native ;)

Put Crysis on... I'm still gutted that Crysis can't get over 50FPS in my system with maximum AA and AS, I may buy another 5870 just so I can.
I wonder what they were thinking when making that game, that still many years later your average system couldn't max it out.

+1

Turn everything up, if it's smooth then fine, if it's a bit choppy I turn down AA and other stuff that doesn't make much of a difference (for example SSAO in Burnout or HBAO in BC2).

Quite a ridiculous amount of e-penis flopping around in here :p

I'm mostly playing Football Manager and Terraria at the moment but I'm maxing them both with ease, frame rate is silky smooth and 38x AA yeah. :p

Most of the time I just turn the res up if its not on default and leave the rest, maybe add some AA and turn vsync on for some things.

Other than that don't do a great deal to em

I let most of the games decide for themselves. Occasionally change screen resolution when a game thinks I live in 1998 with a screen resolution of 800x400, but other than that I'm not really bothered. I think my HD5850 would run most of the games I have maxed out but I don't really care to find out, I'm more interested in a smooth frame rate.

That's basically exactly what they were thinking - they wanted to build an engine that would keep on giving - looked great on medium settings on high end rigs of the time, looks great on high settings on average rigs of today, looks phenomenal maxed out on high end rigs of today.

There's not many games that can still hold their own graphically more than 3.5 years after release, you have to commend Crytek for their approach even if it got them nothing but abuse from many quarters. As this thread is testament to, many gamers are obsessed with the concept of "maxing out" games rather than focusing on what the actual graphical quality is like.

Sort of still on topic,
Does anyone, ever, play at a lower res than native?

I have a 1080p monitor, 24".
Its not a monster of a computer, but can run most things nice at 1080.

I just find that some games look 'better' when dropped down a notch - 1600x900 is the one i sometimes go for.

Image is not too blurry at all, my monitor must scale well.
But certain games, for example when playing Op Flash:Red River, the enemy soldiers just look too small on my 24" monitor when played at 1080p.
So much so that you cannot even make out the superb animation of bullet damage and wounding to the enemy.

Does anyone else ever lower the res for some games?

EDIT: i sometimes wonder if a lot of these console-to-pc games don't always transfer over well to a higher resolution?

I only do it if native resolution isn't supported.

The biggest problem with high resolution is when things like the HUD doesn't scale well, I think Deus Ex is a good example, play that on 1080p and it will be virtually impossible to see the icons. Also I'm currently playing Dragon Age Origins (1680x1050) and have found that the text is a bit small for my liking, I'm sure in 720p it's a nice size but it just seems a bit on the small size at my resolution, never mind anything higher.
