'Next Tuesday'

'This' [Tuesday] refers to the [Tuesday] of this week. So yesterday in your example.

'Next' [Tuesday] refers to the [Tuesday] of the following week. So the 19th in your example.

If it were Monday you asked this, then it would be the same, 'This' being the 12th and 'Next' the 19th.

If I were to say to you "the next time I see you I’m going to punch you in the face" would you think this meant that I would only give you a good kicking on our second encounter ?

19th for sure..

The 26th in this example is "Tuesday week' which always confuses everyone it appears..

"What not this coming Tuesday coming but the following Tuesday??"

That said, I have to know what day it is today first. What day is it today?

As explained before, this example is not the same.

Interesting about the time travelling backwards date responses! I'd say that was completely correct depending on the nature of the question :)

For the record I was asking someone when my exam results came back, so it couldn't have been the previous date.

I actually asked this question very late on Tuesday evening, so 'next tuesday' being the 19th makes more sense in those circumstances, but I still clarified it :p

This...

And another classic GD thread is done....

19th

My mate gets this very wrong the other way. If it is a Monday he will say "do you want to go out next Friday" but he means in 4 days time and isn't too pleased when he rings me up to find I'm doing something else even though I've agreed to his "next Friday"

Continuing from my previous post, you can just think about the week before deciding what to say.

If it's next week then it's next Tuesday.
If it's this week then it's this Tuesday.

It doesn't matter what the current day of the week is!
