It's not quite that simple, though, is it. Tomorrow is the next Thursday, however nobody would refer to tomorrow as 'next Thursday' - tomorrow is 'this Thursday'. It's exactly as shaank put it (and myself before but in a more waffly illegible way

) - 'this' = in this week, 'next' = in next week.

Let's just clarify that - so you'd call the Tuesday after the next one 'next Tuesday'? OK.

For me it's about the week we're in.

On a Monday, "this ***" would imply the remaining days of the current week [Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri]. "Next ***" would imply days of the following week. So, to me, "next Tuesday" would imply the 19th. It's inherently ambiguous though...

I would use This/Next for the forthcoming Tuesday the 19th. Or as i like to call it 'My birthday'

.

For the 26th i would say 'The Tuesday after next' as 'Next tuesday' or 'a week tuesday' can get confusing.

Thats why we either put...."this tuesday" or "next tuesday"

Keeps it simple.
