GTX460 dying? Tester wanted (Stoke)

Hey guys.

It would appear that my 1 month old secondhand GTX460 i bought from the MM is dying. :( It has been running fine all this time until now.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18283099

But i thought i'd come here for help before giving up. It all started a couple of days ago. I turned on my monitor as i wanted to watch a couple of videos before shutting my PC down. The first video was on Youtube and half way through the video i noticed some glitching on the left side of my taskbar. I thought it was a driver error so didn't think much of it. Next up i loaded a 720p mkv video into mpc-hc and again the same glitching happened. Thinking a reboot would fix it i shut my PC down for the night.

Booted up the next day and no glitching on the taskbar when watching videos. I thought all was well. Later that day i went to load Civ5 and once i had loaded a game i has a few grey lines running across the terrain and then some crazy texture flicker/flashing started and even textures moving around the screen. I thought the fan may have stopped and it was over heating but no, the fan was running and the temps were good.

Loaded up Left 4 Dead 2 and the game looked ok, but after a few seconds of loading into a campaign server my game locked up with a sound loop crash and i had to ctrl alt del back to my desktop.

Next i loaded Bad Company 2. I got some flashing on the menus and major texture flashing in game. After a few seconds my screen went completely white. Again, ctrl alt del back to desktop. This game seems to be affected the worst.

Video of flashing in BC2 menu.

Loaded Empire Total War. Seemed to be ok for the 1min i ran it. Did notice a couple of purple and green dots in the skyline. This game was the last thing i installed before my PC started crapping out. It did update DirectX judging from the install but i'm pretty sure it couldn't mess things up this badly. Updated DirectX again since so now running the latest from the MS site.

I've also had my screen go black for a couple of seconds after exiting out of a few games i was testing with and a Nvidia driver recovered message.

Atitool and EVGA OC scanner both report artifacting.

So far all i've tried is reinstalling the drivers i was using (latest WHQL). I'm going to try the previous driver but i have a strong feeling this isn't a software problem with the card running without a hitch up until now.

I'm also going to try running the card via a 2 molex to pcie adaptor on one of the power sockets as i've heard this could work due to PSU load issues and balancing (PSU and rest of spec in sig)

I'll probably also try removing and dropping back my CPU overclock. But apart from these graphical issues my PC has been running rock solid and is on 24/7.

Now onto my last point. I'm hoping somebody in Stoke, preferably the ST6 area reads my post as i'm needing somebody to help me out with a little testing. You can take my GTX460 for a couple of days and run BC2, AtiTool, EVGA oc scanner on it etc just to rule out it being another piece of hardware, eg my PSU being the problem. Please reply here and email me via trust if you can help.

Running fine at the moment, but it's ok with 2D duties. The moment a game comes along it falls to pieces. :(

Please help!!!!

edit: Just loaded a video into MPC-HC. Screen went black and driver recovered message.

If you want a tester, I will be more than happy to help. However, you'll have to send it to me as we're 100 miles apart

Try reseating the card. What sort of temps does it get to?

It sounds as if the VRAM is dead :(
Any warranty at all on it?

That's why i'm hoping for someone from Stoke, and i know there's quite a few Stokies here. I just need them to speak up. :)

Haven't tried reseating yet, but i'll add that to the "to do" list for tomorrow.

Idle temp is around 36-40c. Load is around 65-70c depending on the game. But as i can't even get past the BC2 menu without glitching i don't think temps are the issue here. :p

The guy i bought it from, ErNciLator, told me that he initially bought the card just before Christmas. So i imagine there is a couple of months left on the warranty. I've emailed him to see if he can help me out with an RMA but i've had no reply just yet. He hasn't been on the forums in a couple of days so i imagine he's busy.

I think it could be the VRAM also. I tried downclocking and ramping up my intake fans to see if either would help. Neither did.

If the card was bought from OcUK, then is OcUK not in stoke?

Could take it down there and ask nicely if they'd do a quick check for you?

Not sure where it was bought from tbh. If i hear back from ErNciLator and find out it was from OcUK i will probably head down there myself and ask them to test it for me.

In the meatime however, i'm kinda stuck. :(

Having a bit of a run of bad luck as of late. This is just the icing on the cake. :(

Calling all Stoke people!!!

you could ask the manufacturer?
Also, you got me curios - what else happened? sorry for being nosy :(

How old is the card? If the seller still has a receipt for it and it's still within warranty the I would try and get a replacement especially if it's bought from ocuk. Last time I took my card down for testing they did it for free and I only waited a few mins while the guys did the work on it. You'll have to ask nicely though ;).

I've had it for one month, seller bought it just before Christmas. No idea if he has the receipt or where it was purchased from. Hoping for 'yes' and 'OcUk' to the previous questions.

Quick bump before i turn in for the night. Hope to see some good replies when i get back here tomorrow. :D

I'm in Stoke and also have a gtx 460. You could come and try it in my pc if you want. Shouldn't even have to install drivers. Hows that?

I've also got bad company 2 and l4d 2 installed

Hey

Got it from a competitor within last year. I'll try and look around for the receipt later on. Got your email earlier, not been checking them for a few days!

Hey ErNciLator! Great to hear from you. I'm going to try a couple of things today to see if it helps then i'll head to mame's. Probably over the weekend if he's free just to check it's not my PSU that is becomming faulty or something else. If it is the card i'll post back here to let you know.

Ive just checked and mine states 5 year warranty against manufacturer fault, but anything that they can even start to blame on excess heat and they wont touch it.

Thats with a Zotac Amp btw and i only know this as mine seems to be on the blink as well lol.

Just a small but quick update. I think i've fixed it!:confused:

Will post how in a bit when i have more time.

I'd just checked my email as well. Well if you have more problems with it, I can be in any time on Monday if that's any use. If not will sort out another day before or after.

Thanks mame! :)

I've seemingly fixed it by changing the connection port at the back of the card.

Sadly i'm running VGA due to some EDID corruption issues that my monitor is known for and i'm limited to a very low res if i use DVI. I was using the cards VGA port direct to the monitor, however i'm now connecting from DVI > DVI/VGA adaptor > VGA and all is well.

Can a dodgy VGA port really cause these kinds of issues?

Keeping my fingers crossed that it lasts throughout the weekend with no issues.

ErNciLator, can you keep looking for the receipt though. Just in case. :p
