World of Warcraft = boaring :(

And successful =/= 'As much money as Blizzard make'.

Mate seriously, the real world works like this simple as. If you are sucessful money comes with that. Companys are run to make money not to make people feel all warm and fuzzy inside...

Thanks for the misquote.

What that statement meant is that a game developer does not need to earn as much as Blizzard to be successful, unless you are telling me that every other game that has ever been made was a failure.

None of the MMO's I have named in this thread have collapsed or become tiny. What Blizzard charge isnt what has kept WoW strong, the number of subscribers has.

As soon as those subscribers move onto something else, WoW will share the same fate as any other P2P MMO.

Yet they aren't going anywhere, because Blizzard use their money to keep them entertained...

So you think that WoW is going to have 10 million+ subscribers forever until the end of time? Eventually they will move on, and WoW will lose its current popularity, as is the fate of every MMO.

Yeap they'll move on... too WoW2 :p

Sorry but i think this argument is pointless, your never gonna change the opinion of somebody who loves or hates something

Indeed, but it has kept its subscribers for longer than average and it's still doing very well.

WoW will be around until Blizzard release Titan, and I bet it will still have a very high amount of subscribers, even then.

Exactly debates... (arguements :p ) like this never go anywhere because the two different parties simply value the game differently.

Its like comparing the difference between a PC and an Apple Mac.... OH I DID NOT JUST SAY THAT !!! lol :p

lol i did not relise my post would have so much interest :) i had a read threw and defo a lot have same feelings about simular things thats made it boaring to me

one big moan from me was i personally felt that blizzard was to blame for was trying to squeeze as much cash out of people as possible letting people faction/name/race change having horde and ally on same server etc in the old days if u wanted a new race u lvled it up etc

Lotro + DDO are F2P now because no one was paying for them because they're terrible!

I think thats rather subjective, I personally think that LoTRO is much better than WoW, I most certainly wouldnt define LoTRO as terrible. But then thats the usual overclockers forum poster hyperbole for you.

(mind you, I also think that original SWG, UO, Daoc and AC in their primes were all better than WoW too :) )

Most people who refer to other MMOs as terrible other than WoW havnt even played them, as several people in this thread have stated.

Most people who disliked WoW actually tried it, but didnt enjoy it as much as the other MMOs that they play for whatever reasons, as I have, and I hear continuously from most players in the MMOs that I play.

I'm very sure that WoW's popularity is mostly due to the mentality that assumes 'WoW is the best because it has so many subscribers. Even though I've never tried any of the other MMOs, they are all terrible because WoW has more subscribers'.

Which is all I ever hear time and time again from people defending the boring 'Go here and Kill 10 rats, go there and collect some mushrooms and flowers' fest that is WoW.

This is a huge problem. WoW is a game that charges fees, and as we all know, the one game that makes bucket loads of cash from doing so. So why does it still have a cash shop, full price expansions, and all the things that FTP MMOs actually make money from on top of the fees?

Earlier someone said that the cost of WoW over 6 years is around £600? Actually its much higher than that because you also paid for the game and each expansion, and maybe also a few things from the cash store. The Collector's Editions for WoW are also horribly expensive for a fee based game - they were around £60 on launch if I remember correctly, yet the two CEs that I bought for Guild Wars were only £40 for all the extra content they offered.

So the thing is, that £150 I've spent on GW over 6 years - People playing WoW have likely also spent that much on the games purchases and cash store on top of their fees, so realistically your looking at a cost of £750 over 6 years compared to my £150 in GW (Guild Wars can actually be had for much less than that even if all the games were bought on launch, the standard editions would have cost a total of £95. Nowadays you can get all 4 games for £20 and never have to pay a single penny more, and yes the game is going strong and is very very far from dead yet).

If you think that is worth it for one game, and that Blizzard actually need that much money per player to keep the game good and supported, you are delusional, and even more so if you think any other game is automatically terrible just because it doesnt make as much money as WoW.

You know it isn't the same as when it was released, right? It's been properly developed and updated to keep people interested (which it has).

So have Guild Wars and Maple Story, and neither has had fees since day 1, and they cost a minute amount of what WoW does to play. Lotro and DDO today are still getting regular updates and new content developed that they release as mini expansions for FTP players to purchase once and own forever, exactly how I like to have my games. Judging by all of those games, NO MMO is worth paying *£750* for over a 6 year period.

Are there any MMOs that aren't like this? Serious question because it was what made me quit WoW in the end. I like the idea of an MMO but I despise grinding.

I find that it's only enjoyable if you play with people you know IRL.
Loved having little pvp sessions with a friend or two. Going to enemy cities and just messing around for hours.

I think a lot of it is affected by the people you play it with. I always find games much more enjoyable when you can discuss aspects of the games you play.

I have played WoW for a sum total of 10 mins when it was first released. I'm glad I didn't keep playing. Otherwise I would have wasted my life like some of you guys.

It doesn't have to be a waste of life. So long as you don't do what I did and become completely addicted you could happily play casually and mainly enjoy exploring and the social side. I do have a good friend now who I met 100% through WoW so it's not all bad.

Unless you developed a cure for cancer or some free energy supply in the mean time I would suggest that you have and are currently in the process of wasting yours.

Agreed. WoW has some good sides to it. I met my girlfriend via WoW :p Still together 3 years later :)

I wish I could play it more casually, but I was always into the hardcore raiding, and get quite bad with it. It's a very addictive game, but excellent at the same time. The only downside was, I never played anything else!

Vanilla WoW always was and always will be the best out of all the versions.

40 man raids, fresh and exciting content, months spent trying to down Ragnaros, DKP etc.

it didnt start like that though lol, nothing was ever casual about wow until the end of tbc>wotlk really and its even more casual friendly now which isnt a bad thing, it just means the old players are playing a very different game than the one they used to and also, rose tints also come into play i think when looking back.
one large factor in all the debates about why people are still playing has got to be the social side of it imho, if all of a sudden blizzard said no more friendslist/chat ingame etc i would think a huge number of people would stop playing it and move on.

It's quite pathetic that 10mins of an MMO put you at risk of serious addiction to the point that it would have 'wasted your life'. I play a lot of WoW yet still manage to maintain a great job and an active social life - never really seen the challenge in it. Do you suffer from such weakness in other parts of your life?
