Why do people like the underdog?

I'll even admit to it that sometimes for some strange reason I prefer the underdog but I don't know why.

I think part of it is feeling sorry for them, and also a strange national dislike for successful people.

It could be the excitement of seeing someone unexpected triumph, it could be transference that AcidHell2 is talking about or it could be a dislike of the bigger party in the contest. I'd suspect those are three of the most common reasons.

But I agree, it's a kind of subconscious way of thinking 'if they can win, I could too'. Besides, who likes powerful bullies? Supporting underdogs sort of links in with supporting a fairer society etc.

Apparently its a very British thing. In the US they always support the absolute favourites as they don't want to be on the 'losers side'.

I've also read a high percentage of the population vote for the candidate they think will win, as a kind of 'YES, WE WON, I'M A WINNER' type thing. Retards.
