Idiots who tailgate

Recently I had to do a driver improvement course, cos i was pinched for speeding. (I'm in the US) Anyway I was very suprised to see this in the course material. It said, if someone is tailgating you, lightly tap on the brakes so that they get the message
Seems that you may provoke the situtation if you ask me. The driver who's tailgating is acting agressive and over confident in his abilities as it is. I think you're best off just moving aside and letting them get on with it.
After driving in many different countries, I would say the British have the best lane discipline on the motorways, BY FAR of any of the other countries I've driven in. Man you lot need to come over to the USA, if you want to see tailgaters, undertaking as the norm, cruise control stuck at 65-70 in the overtaking lane. I've had to learn a new form of patience !
Have you ever driven in Germany? THEY know lane discipline, simply because they might get a Porsche or similar up the chuff at 170!

I am habitually tailgated, be it by other trucks (idiots) or car drivers...
Its daft, if the tailgater gave it a moments thought, they would have better line of sight & an opportunity to build up speed if they were 100yds or so behind me.
Alas, they sit so close, I can't see them in my mirrors and each time they pull out to see past my trailer, they tend to have a near head on (again, line of sight & all that)
Tailgating is bad, end of.
I've surprised a few tailgaters over the years, heavy trucks take a long time to stop, empty ones don't.

Gotta do it to lorrys for the best economy. Get so close they can't see you in their mirrors, they love it.

As for your comments about USA being allowed to overtake on either side. Wrong ! It's the same as most other places in the mostly disciplined Western world, that the left lane is for overtaking on all interstates. Except only about 50% of the drivers abide by this rule. I believe it's because a lot of the regular roads are 2-3 lanes, and there's there's no overtaking rule on a regular road. So it's habitual for an American to just stay in his or her lane undertaking and overtaking as they feel fit.
I was on the M1 in the 50mph road work section and I was in the single lane that runs along the other south side of the motorway.
I was doing 50mph and I was about 5 car lengths behind the next car in line and in front of that there was a long tail of cars. I figured there was no point in racing up behind them and i'd keep a nice gap as it is likely to stop suddenly.
An absolute weapons grade idiot in a silver S class on Belguim plates as sat about a foot from my bumper for the full 7 mile lftnth of the road, he kept darting around me to see around me as if to say hurry up. I honestly couldnt go anyway so I waved him back a few times, then he got closer still so I decided to slow down to about 25mph to **** him off. He got closer still and flashed his lights so i increased speed to 50mph as i had made my point and still he was behinde me so my last thing to get rid of him was to break test him.

I've heard the braking performance of a bare tractor unit can be very impressive.
I had fun in a contraflow on the M1/M25 (was def one of them, was a long trip lol) last night. it was a 50mph limit and I had cruise control set to 50 (ofc) when a guy in a newish Merc (2009 plate) that looked about the size of a C class came up behind me and set up house a few feet form my rear bumper, so I cancelled my cruise control, then when the car had coasted down to 30 I resumed it, when he was on the bumper again I cancelled it again, rinse and repeat after 3 cycles of cancel/resume he got the message and assumed a safe distance

See now that is a pretty reasonable way to behave, you're very unlikely to cause an accident doing that.

i like doing this one... If they want to drive fast, why do they choose the single lane part, and not drive where there are two lanes on the other side of the barrier?
Just doesn't happen like that - as many posters above have stated - solid 3 lane traffic, idiot behind in crappy 20yr old scrap-heap virtually on your backseats.
You go to the middle lane when you get a chance, then as they go past, they honk their horn and are giving you all sorts of gestures. They do the same to every car in the row.
At the end of said road, they had only achieved about 3 metres progress over me lol.
