Horses on the road in the 21st century

ubersonic said “Because the fee is waived.”
It’s waived as the tax is not for using the road. The tax is for causing bad emissions. If your emissions drop below a set rate you don’t pay tax. The higher the emissions the higher the tax. It’s not a fee or an argument for rights to use the road.

/sigh, no its to use the road, I have pointed this out already, emissions is just what they use to grade the tax levels now (a decade ago it was based on engine size but they realised emissions would be more lucrative and with people jumping on the green band wagon they could get away with it easily).

Typical cyclist ****, see them every day in London.

Funny really... Considering a large proportion of posts in this thread are from "typical driver ****"...;)

Horses have just/more right to be on the road than you in your cars so get over it. Same with cyclists. The difference is they have to fear for their lives every time they go out because of idiot drivers who don't understand the idea of driving for the road/conditions and/or aren't interested in anything but themselves because they are in a metal box.

When was the last time you heard of a horse and rider killing someone? When was the last time you heard of a car killing someone? A lot of the situations in this thread would have been rectified by people not being in such a hurry and slowing down for blind bends. What happens if there wasn't a horse just round that bend but a car broken down, or a tractor trimming a hedge?

Slow down and drive safely and maybe all legitimate rroad users can get along (and I include cyclists in those first two words of advice).

I don't see the problem. Roads aren't just for cars and being 21st century. We should be legalising more vehicles on the road. electric skate boards, scooters, segways and another cheap transport solution for short journeys. That most people use a car for, but don't really need to and as petrol continues to increase I think more and more people would be interested in such contraptions and keeping a car for longer journeys or when you need to carry stuff.

In the 21st century horses belong in a glue factory being boiled to make adhesives for various industrial purposes.

ubersonic I cannot find anywhere where it says it’s to use the road and there are plenty of examples of vehicles being allowed to use the road without the tax.

If a horse dumps a steaming load down your road, just grab a shovel and put it on your flower bed.

That's because it isn't, directly. Vehicle owners pay VED for a vehicle licence, which is required to use the roads. So semantically you could say it's to use the road, but you could equally argue semantically that it's not as its for a licence. Meh.

They should be allowed to ride on the roads as long as they stop and pick up the horse poo with a plastic bag. Clean up the mess. But i am also not convinced on the horse shoe. Nailing metal on the horses foot does not seem like a good idea. I know they have been doing it for 100 of years.

Now that I agree on. For the most part horse shoe are a giant waste of time and money that do more harm than good. Most people only use them as they have always used them.

You only need shoes if you do a massive amount of road work. Your average hose riders do not need shoes. Not had shoes on my horse for years and I do endurance riding and in fact a large amount of endurance riders don’t use shoes. If endurance riders can get away without shoes then you can bet most none endurance riders do not need shoes.

I agree. The sooner government creates a new class of powered vehicles the better. There should then be a large increase in pedestrianised town centres with these aforementioned vehicles allowed on them. Most inner town/citiy driving doesn't need a traditional motor vehicle to do so it would have so many positives.. Reducing congestion, pollution and deaths and increase fitness and just make areas much nicer to live/be in.

As a horse owner, 4 to be precise, and living in a small village I would never wish to see horses banned from the roads. We never have problems with traffic when we do use the road, indeed we find that drivers are courteous, as we make every effort not to impede traffic.
However as cyclist have been mentioned... the speed trial/road race types... they are a total pain and show no courtesy to anyone or anything, including horses, they really do think they own the road.

Well here's a well balanced argument!

Guess what, there are rude horse riders too.
